I have reached a milestone and decided to listen to stuff from my early years on youtube.

I really liked both MTH ( Brain Capers/Saturday Gigs etc) and Heep ( Live/Look at Yourself ) but for different reasons.

I saw them both live - Heep at the Greyhound and MTH at Fairfield Halls in the early 70's.
Personally I prefer the heavier rock of Heep and their prog rock style to the glam rock of MTH. However MTH were more popular.

I saw Heep in Tavistock 2 years ago - bit of a surprise as they tour Germany mostly. Great to hear the old stuff.

Fond memories of the Greyhound on a Sunday evening...

Mott for me but anything with a Mick Ronson connection does it. Ian Hunter is 81 now and has been laid up with tinnitus but Is apparently still worth seeing live when he’s able to play.

It’s a no brainer, just because of this:

“In Seventy-two we was born to lose
We slipped down snakes into yesterday's news
I was ready to quit
But then we went to Croydon”

And for Diary of a Rock ‘n’ Roll Star. A brilliant book.

Mott had that little bit of Bowie magic sprinkled on them and were a tight unit. Heap a bit heavier a bit looser and not as 'poppy"

For me both good for different reasons.

I believe I was at the gig they were talking about. February 71 or 72. Can't remember which.

Have to agree with that; every rock fan should read it!

Ian Hunter was my rock hero at that time and I always tried to waylay him during the interval. One time he said to me that they were ready to pack it in but crowds like this give them a reason to carry on.

That would have been around the dates you mention; Greyhound?

If you don’t know - Part one of a two part Hunter biography is available. It’s by Campbell Devine who did a fairly exhaustive Mott book a few years ago.

You must be a little older than me. First time at The Greyhound was Queen’s Seven Seas of Rhye tour. It is of course Mott above Heep. Memorable gigs were Earthband and Nektar to me. And the lovely Sonia Christina who was reputed to have accidentally flushed a jewel encrusted g string down the loo at The Greyhound.

Come to think of it, weren’t Queen supporting MTH? I had to go home early after someone puked down the back of my trousers.

Thanks, Ted, I’ll definitely seek that out.
