I think another poster had an excellent point why on earth is the BBC funding a magazine when money is tight? Perhaps this guy is raising the profile of the magazine as maybe it is on the hit list?

The truth is, and I can be a tad pretentious about this so feel free to slate me, but if you are going to have an institution such as the BBC then it promoting classical music should be within its remit. Because it is an absolute mainstay of Western Culture. It does matter and is perhaps the best argument for the funding model, and one I put myself behind for a long, long time.

Only really come to have any kind of understanding Classical music over the last 10 or so years, appreciating why so many people hold it in such high esteem. This might sound daft, and I fully deserve to have the piss taken out of me for it, but it is like training your ears to really listen. To understand the nuances of it, to allow it to move you, to take you to a different place.

LOL. I cringed as I wrote that but for me, it has been a genuine eye/ear-opening experience. And a fascinating history behind so many of the pieces you hear all the time. I suspect most people would surprise themselves by realising how much classic music they do know and the impact it has on them.

Really you need to read the words of these appalling old nationalistic dirges.

You could always put a modern slant on them.

How about 'Land of Dope and Tory' sung by Rod Stewart.

One thing in all of themm, is GOD.

GOD has ordained approved all of Albion's excesses no matter how perfidious.

One thing that needs to be done is to update these dirges to brexit.

'Brexit oh Brexit, G-OOOO-DDDD (descant) save our brexit.

Indeed. Imagine the disappointment suffered by all those Stormzy fans who, having enjoyed the proms up to that point, find the last night marred by these jingoistic offerings.

Music genres are mostly age related. There are not many who love classics at an early age and there are not many who like grunge or rap in old age. Your music tastes definitely change as you get older. I guess that makes you about 92 Matov ;-)

I have no problem with the BBC promoting classical music, I am a fan of the genre, but these days magazines of any genre are a money pit.

The Beeb has radio 3 a permanent classic radio station plus they do concerts on BBC2 why do they need an expensive magazine that no one buys?

LOl. I suspect my music tastes have just widened a little bit although I always had time for classical music.

But, and with my usual proviso about my pretentiousness classical music is a little bit more than just a 'genre'. It is so much more than, given its wider impact.

I freely admit to no longer being able to defend the BBC funding model anymore but still think insitutions such as Radio 3 and this particular magazine are worth defending and I would, probably, be willing to pay a subcription myself but cannot expect others to be forced to. Just a shame that Classical is seen as such a niche interest.

The last night should just be replaced with a lecture on how racist Britain is and the last ever rendition Swing Low can be played before it is banned. Any emotional outpouring can be stopped by Dave shouting at the Queen. God Save the Queen can be replaced by a slow, acoustic Tracy Chapman version of The Sex Pistols song of the same name.
That’s that sorted.

I personally find the lyrics to most rap songs more offensive and have have been influential to the way alot of youngsters act. Always about money drugs, gangs and Words including n****
But let's get rid of hope and glory.

I take it that when the footballers line-up they have no idea or interest in the content of the national anthems of the opposing country.

It would be quite a shock to them particularly when hearing ours, that they are basically foreign invaders and can f**k right off.

It would be good if a translator was on hand would love to see their faces as they realise what is actually being sung heartily about them by the English supporters.

There's nothing of the sort in the national Anthem and, frankly, listen to the Irish one if you like or perhaps the Italian or French one. Obviously don't bother with the silly Aussie or Canadian ones.
My problem with it is about it being one person - the monarch. It should be changed to Rule Britannia or Land of Hope and Glory, or perhaps Jerusalem.
I'm sure you will agree.

Jerusalem all day long. Can you imagine any of your suggestions getting approval?
