i just think people need to keep their emotions in check.

of course today was poor, and the next 3 games wont be any better...were on the beach, safe with nowt to play for.

Roy has, again...kept us up spending f*** all money and has just signed a 1 year extension for next year.

SP isnt going to entice a manager this summer offering next to no transfer budget to improve the squad, but Roy is obviously happy to stay another year, and he will keep us up again next year...thats all that matters.

Lets not get above our stations expectation wise.eh?

Roy will not imo be able to keep us up next year. He has been sussed out and every team knows how to play against his rigid inflexible tactics. You are perfectly entitled to your opinions and you may possibly be right, but the groundswell of opinion does seem to be against you on this.

I never expect much from Palace ( next year will be my 60th season) but I do expect a bit of pride and fight. I feel annoyed, upset and embarrassed by that today. Roy has to take some responsibility, why start Jimmy Mac who is clearly knackered and now injured.
You say chill as we are safe... correct so why not give Jairo/Max and Pierrick a run out? Because he is stubborn and set in his ways.My starting midfield today would have been Jairo/Max and James M. Big fan of Roy’s but enough is enough however who in their right mind would take this job with no money to spend?

A good post.

I broadly agree with the comments but I am not convinced that we will avoid that dreaded relegation trapdoor next season given that we have an ageing squad which needs replacing, there is precious little transfer value to be had from them and our coffers will hardly be filled to the brim for replacements.

So despite saying how awful we were, you agree Roy should stay?

Terrible performance to day, but lets not get carried away, we have a major problem in one main area, midfield, the front three are getting crap service whilst the defence are being put under pressure by stupid free kicks being given away, Riderweld and Meyer whilst not giving away free kicks, actually passed the ball much better, as for Roy, be careful what you wish for, personally i think he will leave at the end of this season

Except it's not just one area... We have a right back who is lower level Championship standard at best..
Ageing centre halves, two of whom can't keep themselves injury free for more than 5 games at a time..
Just TWO strikers, one of which has scored 5 times in nearly 3 seasons...

And then we have our midfield problem..

Not so long ago I would have been seething for days after a performance like today's, but now just an hour later I'm pretty much over it. Roy might or might not have lost the dressing-room, but these players have certainly lost me. I just don't care any more.

Am I allowed a minority opinion here? We had absolutely nothing to play for, while for Aston Villa it was the most important match of the entire season. We're the oldest club in the League, with players who aren't in peak fitness (thanks to Covid-19), who have been playing two matches a week, and very little depth in the club. We are a weak scoring side, but we had the good fortune of scoring an early goal, which would have allowed us to play our comfortable style -- and the goal was wrongly disallowed.

The players are human. They showed tremendous fight in the 2nd half against Chelsea, with little to fight for (even though Chelsea did). Today they were playing on the road, in an empty stadium. I'm sympathetic.

But I'm also critical. I don't know why Luka is our captain. He is not fit, he makes pointless fouls, and he doesn't seem to contribute to the spirit of the group through either encouragement or criticism. Physical bullying of the opposition is useless unless it's supported by good play. Roy is a calm, resolute tactician who understands our strengths and weaknesses, but at this point in the surreal season he is simply too conservative. Conservative was fine for the first 30 matches, but now... why?

As a supporter, I'd love to see more of the substitutes, but perhaps Roy is following a master plan to convince ownership just how limited most of our regulars are. 5-8 losses in a row might persuade the owners to invest more. Losing a couple million for each place in the table this season would be a pittance compared with the threat of relegation next season.

Your forgetting the left back who has no idea how to defend anything at all ....clueless...he is essentially a winger being played out of position.

That thought had crossed my mind but I don't see Roy being that Machiavellian (SP perhaps).

If we were to lose the next three games as well, it would leave SP and the board with major headaches. it will be interesting to see how things develop.

I see big problems, next season starts in September we have been s*** and could lose 8 consecutive games, how will this change for the start of next season?

I also broadly agree with your statement here but the bit in bold is the issue for a few reasons:

1. We have no guarantee that Roy will keep us up next year.

2. What makes you think there will be transfer budget available the year after? (The other issue here is, why are we the only club in the Premier League that can't afford to buy a single player?)

3. Arguably the most important... keeping Roy another year isn't solving anything, just delaying an inevitable action. Roy was always here to steady the ship. He's now been here 3 years and we haven't moved forward (as that wasn't what he's here for). But if we as a club have any ambition, we have to do something. And by something I mean, a passionate and forward-thinking manager, buy players, expand the stadium, promote youth who are ready etc. But we don't do anything.

So to me, this isn't about today's game. More so, this game signifies where we are at now. And retaining this level, what does Crystal Palace look like in the near future.
