Not so long ago I would have been seething for days after a performance like today's, but now just an hour later I'm pretty much over it. Roy might or might not have lost the dressing-room, but these players have certainly lost me. I just don't care any more.

That’s the effect it has on me. The players have their own pride to satisfy , why should a manager have to do more than just prod that now and again. In the past he has given them game plans that have brought down the mighty on occasion . And with some pride and application from the players some really good results have come. What we have seen at times all season isn’t bad coaching , it’s poor and sometimes lazy application , there are some days , as was today when the passing is pathetic. Piss poor throw ins, weak kneed shooting, on and on. And the thing is they are not school boys, They have been learning all of these things since they were school boys .

I see big problems, next season starts in September we have been s*** and could lose 8 consecutive games, how will this change for the start of next season?

I share your grave concerns and have done for quite a while.

Certainly outside of HOL my views have been made patently clear and people with whom I have engaged in conversation are broadly of like mind.Zaha's transfer value is plummeting by the day and with a significant overhaul required to replace ageing players without a great deal in the coffers, this is a recipe for disaster.

A good post.

I broadly agree with the comments but I am not convinced that we will avoid that dreaded relegation trapdoor next season given that we have an ageing squad which needs replacing, there is precious little transfer value to be had from them and our coffers will hardly be filled to the brim for replacements.

That’s a shock revelation - so just to be clear are we taking that as your prediction for us to be relegated next season, as you denied making that prediction for this season, despite doing so on numerous posts of “doom and gloom” and as you have done every season since we have been in the Prem..!!

Just checking so we are all clear on your prediction for next season..!

Worst of all not only can we not score but we now cannot defend anymore as well. Worst performance I have ever seen!

Obviously your a fairly new supporter, who wasn't around to endure the Francis and Taylor years against poorer opposition.

i just think people need to keep their emotions in check.

of course today was poor, and the next 3 games wont be any better...were on the beach, safe with nowt to play for.

Roy has, again...kept us up spending f*** all money and has just signed a 1 year extension for next year.

SP isnt going to entice a manager this summer offering next to no transfer budget to improve the squad, but Roy is obviously happy to stay another year, and he will keep us up again next year...thats all that matters.

Lets not get above our stations expectation wise.eh?

Indeedy!

Am I allowed a minority opinion here? We had absolutely nothing to play for, while for Aston Villa it was the most important match of the entire season. We're the oldest club in the League, with players who aren't in peak fitness (thanks to Covid-19), who have been playing two matches a week, and very little depth in the club. We are a weak scoring side, but we had the good fortune of scoring an early goal, which would have allowed us to play our comfortable style -- and the goal was wrongly disallowed.

The players are human. They showed tremendous fight in the 2nd half against Chelsea, with little to fight for (even though Chelsea did). Today they were playing on the road, in an empty stadium. I'm sympathetic.

But I'm also critical. I don't know why Luka is our captain. He is not fit, he makes pointless fouls, and he doesn't seem to contribute to the spirit of the group through either encouragement or criticism. Physical bullying of the opposition is useless unless it's supported by good play. Roy is a calm, resolute tactician who understands our strengths and weaknesses, but at this point in the surreal season he is simply too conservative. Conservative was fine for the first 30 matches, but now... why?

As a supporter, I'd love to see more of the substitutes, but perhaps Roy is following a master plan to convince ownership just how limited most of our regulars are. 5-8 losses in a row might persuade the owners to invest more. Losing a couple million for each place in the table this season would be a pittance compared with the threat of relegation next season.

My thoughts exactly Charlie, my thoughts exactly!

You are allowed a minority opinion, except for two things.
1) After the win at Bournemouth there was obviously talk within the club of pushing on for European football.
2) We've now lost 5 games in a row, which is totally unacceptable

That thought had crossed my mind but I don't see Roy being that Machiavellian (SP perhaps).

If we were to lose the next three games as well, it would leave SP and the board with major headaches. it will be interesting to see how things develop.

Maybe we will see some $$$$$$$$$$$$ coming out?

Has that funfair dreamland thing opened yet hailing? whatever its called? Thing is, we are in a better position than villa, Roys done the hard work, i don"t mind losing the last 8 if it means we start september with a win or two, i trust steve and the yanks to purchase a few players in the next few months!

I don’t think the club would benefit from a European place. It would put to much pressure on the finances . And our limited squad would be knackered well before Christmas. Having said that we didn’t need to lose the games we are doing to avoid it. The potential is still there, the Chelsea game showed that but outside of Liverpool, the other poor performances were against teams that didn’t have much themselves and pride should have produced at least 6 more points before the end of season. Playing as we are it will be nothing. And that can’t be thought OK.
