Sometimes the Police/CPS will opt to go for a manslaughter charge over a murder one. It is usually done to make a conviction more likely. I would imagine here because there was no proof linking one person to an act that killed this poor policeman, had the trial been for murder there was a possibility that it could not be proved and everyone got off. Manslaughter however much it seems unjust ensured these people will do some time. I don't agree with this BTW a hard working public servant lost his life doing his job. It is no consolation to those left behind either but better something than a failed murder charge (as without new evidence they could not be tried again for the same offence.)

Thanks for this very informative. From the reports on local news I was of the opinion that the Jury found them not guilty of murder but guilty of manslaughter.

So in this case looks like the jury had two options. To convict of murder - possibly higher bar - or manslaughter where it was more certain to get a conviction. As I said no comfort for the family but now in the hands of a judge to send them down for a long time.

I am quite happy for them to be guilty of manslaughter as murder implies premeditation. In fact they can be guilty of being a shopping trolley for all I care what matters is the sentence they get. There are always degrees of any crime, a single punch in a bar is not the same as dragging a man for a mile in a speeding car. I doubt it will happen but they should get 20 years.
