With respect why would anyone jet off abroad knowing that at any time, any country can either lockdown or force self isolation. One year without a foreign holiday. Is that such a big thing to ask, really. This bug ain't finished yet no matter how low our rates are. People cant have their cake and eat it.

100% this. Read about one woman who was complaining about the Spanish lockdown, having booked a holiday on Wednesday! Ffs do they not follow the news, Spain going into lockdown has been on the cards for a couple of weeks

It’s the tarring of an entire country and its outlying islands with the same brush I don’t get. Mainland Spain and the Canaries are 700 miles apart and yet a decision taken because of something happening in northern Spain affects those coming home from the Canary Islands where they have had very few cases. That kind of logic just baffles me and you’ll have some people that will be seriously out of pocket because they have to self isolate for 2 weeks when they return.

It’s holiday season for the Spanish as well - they are moving around from cities/towns to the coast - They are having spikes in certain regions and are moving around passing the virus on. I understand Governments closing borders and quarantining on return to countries. We complain that the government do things slowly and now complain when they do it quickly - grrr!

If you take that view you will never go away again because this virus is going nowhere. This is not going to be miraculously ok in a years time. At some point, some form of normality needs to return through managing the risk.

Sorry but not sure what that has to do with the Canary Islands. You do not get a massive influx of mainland Spanish travelling to the Canaries. Are you suggesting perhaps our borders should be closed to everyone? I think it is impossible to differentiate the levels of danger from people travelling from different countries. Either lock us down completely or don’t. What they are currently doing is helping no-one.

This is correct but we are 5 months into the worst pandemic for a century; moaning about being slow, care home deaths, PPE and the rest.
Normality will happen but in 5 months! Now labour want compensation for these people. How much money do they think the uk can throw at this?
Stupidity from all areas.

Woman who worked in the Safari Park gift shop on her return to work is told she is now a cleaner.

Whilst I feel sorry for her to a point I am afraid that across the country staff are now being told to double up. Tesco has sacked the cleaning firm for it's Metro stores and told the staff they will now have to do it, harsh but this is the reality of the crisis.

One comment made me laugh from a clothing store employee "Cleaning is a skilled job". Err no it's not, at least not in a clothing store it maybe in a hospital but that is a different level entirely.

It's not just the shop staff I saw a comment that if staff can work from home and don't need to go into the office then why can't those jobs be done in another country, ouch.

Sadly we should expect to see a lot more of this.

Thought that was an excellent article too.

Notice how the Pharmist running the business just gets on with cleaning work, whilst the gift shop worker (who seems to have had a few demotions) isn't willing to work.

Moving on to people complaining about not being able to work if they have to iscolate on return to the UK. My heart bleeds. The government has acted quickly, they should have always known it was a risk.

You are completely correct, i have lived in Lanzarote for 11 years, there has been 100 cases only here since the March 12th lockdown, i am not reliant on any tourism for my livelihood, but only Norway have done the same, it is extremely safe compared to the UK, it is a political decision, Boris wants to dictate where you spend your money, and he wants it to be in the UK

Murcia is a problem region and that’s the low end place the Spanish go to. I think there’s quite a few processing plants there.

Mounting evidence shows masks may help avoid severe illness, even if you get COVID-19 - [Link]

"Gandhi noted another study, which examined passengers and crew on an isolated cruise ship in Argentina during the COVID-19 pandemic. All passengers and crew received masks, and out of the 217 passengers and crew on board, 81% of those infected with COVID-19 were asymptomatic.

Gandhi also cited an example where more than 100 workers at a seafood processing plant in Oregon were confirmed positive for COVID-19. Universal masking was required at the plant, and the vast majority — 95% of the workers — were asymptomatic.

The same happened two weeks ago at a Tyson chicken plant in Arkansas, where universal masking was required. In this case, out of 481 people who were infected, 455 were asymptomatic, which also led to a 95% asymptomatic rate.

The studies highlight that universal masking may help achieve rates of higher asymptomatic infection. In a viral pandemic, Gandhi said, one of the goals is to find ways to move toward milder disease manifestations."

Fascinating data is emerging and gaining momentum in this area, considering it's something that's not been widely considered until recently. It's also been demonstrated in animal models.

"People need to know that wearing masks can reduce transmission of the virus by as much as 50 percent, and those who refuse are putting their lives, their families, their friends, and their communities at risk," IHME said in a statement.‘’

That’s obviously wrong.

While these face coverings will no doubt reduce the length and spread of a cough or sneeze, they do little else. In fact they can be a lot worse looking at how they’re worn, touched, taken off and stored or disposed of.

‘Researcher Siddhartha Verma and his team experimented with different choices in material and design to “determine how well face masks block droplets as they exit the mouth,” the study explained.

The researchers found that well-fitted homemade masks with multiple layers of quilting cotton offered the best protection. Those masks significantly reduced the number of droplets, according to the researchers’ findings.

While studies continue to illustrate that masks are important, Verma said that they are not a substitute for social distancing.

“If you take a look at the visuals, you can see there’s a lot of leakage from the sides and from the top, even for the best mask.” Verma said. “So masks are not 100 percent effective. Using a mask doesn’t reduce the risk of transmission to zero. That’s why it’s so important to use a combination of masks and social distancing.”

Yes there’s the issue of which mask, who made it and all the rest of it, with most of the ones worn let all your air out of the sides, top and bottom, or you can’t breathe, then it gets touched blah blah etc.

If I was on public transport I’d probably wear one. But in a sparsely populated shop? The numbers and footfall is controlled by queuing anyway and I think it’s highly irresponsible that vulnerable people are being fooled into thinking and saying they’re ‘now safe to go into public places.’ They aren’t. Some I’ve spoken to know they aren’t. Some think it’s fine to go anywhere now. Oh dear.

‘ Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said earlier this week that the novel coronavirus is likely here to stay.

“I think we ultimately will get control of it. I don’t really see us eradicating it,” the United States’ leading infectious disease expert said.“I think with a combination of good public health measures, a degree of global herd immunity and a good vaccine — which I do hope and feel cautiously optimistic that we will get. I think when you put all three of those together, I think we will get very good control of this,” Fauci said.’

This is likely. But you cannot get herd immunity by trying to stop it or people not getting infected. There’s a lot of delaying the inevitable. I think the government have secretly admitted herd immunity is the option.

All that’s happening is delaying the inevitable of herd immunity. The vaccination is miles away. The virus unfortunately spread to every country because almost nobody closed their airports apart from repatriation. Do that and it dies out in each country in funnily enough the same shape of curve every country has had. And then only they have outbreaks and second waves or whatever they term it.

‘Whack a mole‘ policies. What an apt description.

Everywhere is likely to have outbreaks. Not because of Spain or anywhere but because unless you lock everyone in their homes permanently, the virus will keep spreading in its local ecosystem.

""Police chiefs blame officers' 'conscious or unconscious' bias as figures show young BAME men were almost TWICE as likely to be handed fines for breaches of Covid-19 lockdown rules""

[Link]

So yet again senior police officers throw the ranks under the bus with claims of racism.

The alternate explanation is that some young people chose to ignore government advice on social distancing and go on marches and illegal raves and parties.

I feel sorry for the bobby on the beat.
