Never been busier at the moment. Due to the lockdown (build up of work), furlough being paid, mortgage holidays, people not going on holiday.
Furlough finishing October, mortgage payment holidays finishing, bounce back loans starting to be paid back.
I reckon that it will be flat out upto Xmas, then it will nose dive massively. Usually jan/feb are a bit slower then it picks up, don’t think it will in 2021.
Batten down the hatches I think.

How much of the not working at the start of lockdown was because of shortage of materials, people postponing or builders taking a part paid rest? Or not wanting to be off and on claiming furlough?

I don’t blame them.

Thanks for the post. Good to hear. What I expected with few holidays taken.

Are you agreeing to them claiming up to 7k of our money; twice without needing it or just taking time off. That's 14k that paye have to cover. I hope everyone who took this illegally gets caught and given a huge fine along with having to pay it back.

I’m the same, can’t work out while I’m so busy but also expecting next year to struggle.

Rents going down though for first time ever that I can remember

We haven’t had a day off, worked all the way through. Plaster has been hard to get, but we’ve always had some.
It was hard for builders that never saw the lockdown coming, as most of the builders yards shut and the ones that were open were only doing deliveries.
The firms that are slow at paying their bills and are generally rude to the lads in the builders yards were the ones that struggled for materials.
Plaster has been slow to get as people are panic buying, it took a while to get the amount of plaster needed from the factory, I hear it is now the bags that the plaster goes in that can’t be made quick enough.
Don’t know what will happen if there’s a second wave, the government would need to lengthen the furlough scheme and everyone have another 3 months mortgage holiday, just delaying an even bigger slump.

The self employed handyman I use has been really busy he has more work than he can handle.

I guess a lot of people sitting at home bored have decided to freshen up their homes, moving is a nightmare so they are opting for a revamp instead.

Good luck to everyone out there hope you keep busy.

It’s a physically demanding and damaging job. Bad backs etc. Knowing when to take a break can be a difficult decision when self employed. This made the decision that bit easier. Not saying it’s right but I can see why some people thought fvck it when millions of others were glad to be off. A team of builders were at a neighbour’s and I don’t think anyone said a word. Surprised really given the amount of snitching and grassing going on.

The tax man will have a plan to find out.
Might ask for bank statements which will show wages and furlough payments. One man bands will get away with it but self employed through another company will get caught. Cant pay cash for too long as it has to be put on their accounts.

That’s fraud.

Deciding to take furlough after cancelling private work isn’t.

But you could’ve done the odd job for cash while on furlough. But I suppose only if the customer phones and says they’ll pay cash because they want it done and builders weren’t really wanting to disrupt their break in a heatwave and £2,500 a month.

You can be on furlough and take a secondary job and get paid from that job. I think you just couldn't work the same hours as your furloughed job which is why lots of people were doing night shifts at supermarkets etc. Maybe this lot were furloughed from their night shift building jobs
