Surely if he is appealing the length of his sentence and hoping for a reduction, is there the possibility that the appeal judge could reject the appeal and increase the sentence?

There aren't really any published grounds for appeal. There are rumours the sentence could be increased due to unrevealed evidence with-held from the trial.
