I've done loads of jobs as a temp'. The best/worst was for Royal Mail sorting office (Guildford) where full-time employees stood around chatting, whilst tamp' workers did all the mail sorting. Royal Mail 'workers' must have been on a different rate. They were happy to stand around doing f-all

As a newbie at the sorting office he had to do a full days work which meant sort his mail then go out on delivery. The long term staff had the easy rounds and would be finished in half a day after that if they fancied it they were on overtime so left same time as my mate on double bubble. None of the old guard were interested in doing that until the management developed a spine and told them they would actually have to do a day's work for a day's pay. At that point they decided the easy shift was on nights and as they had seniority they were allowed to kick the newbies out of their jobs and onto the harder day shift. My mate was not impressed. Seniority in the Post Office was a real bug bear with staff and management as you had a 2 tier work force. The older guys were on better money had first pick over jobs and holidays and what shifts they worked. I have no idea if that still exists today I hope not because it really hamstrung the Post Office.

I have always found the Tea Baronies to be a fascinating thing. I can't find anything online. But basically ownership over selling tea in the post office sorting offices was passed down across generations. Very lucrative and defended with violence. A bit like the Glasgow ice cream wars.
