Just awful and I'm in shock to be honest.

I knew the officer involved and worked with them for a number of years at Croydon.

Just unbelievable.

Sorry to hear that.
Sadly we can only hope that this will hasten everyone to ensure that stop and search is allowed to continue at pace - white, black or other - anyone carrying a weapon of any sort should be taken off the street without the need to even go to court.
Our country is going to the dogs and everyone in charge seems to be happy to let it do so and With Khan in charge of London it is little wonder.
A seriously dangerous man given the power he wields!

For someone to shoot a copper and then shoot themselves sounds more like mental health case than the usual gangster stuff (not that they're mutually exclusive to each other). Sure we'll learn more in the next day or so, but it's far from the typical pattern that usually gets the headlines around young people with guns.

Yes probably used as a reason for no change and no ‘stop n search’

Yep. A failed state. Had to be bailed out by central Government and effectively a new CE imposed on it. Drove through West Croydon yesterday for the first time in years and it is utterly f***ed. Entire borough on its knees.

And RIP to that poor Police Officer.

The council is mainly to blame. Absolute mismanagement.

As for West Croydon, it's really not that bad. Unless you get intimidated by the high street being full of, how might you put it, 'ethnics'. Seems to be where that crude, drive by observation has come from.

I live 10 minutes walk from both WC and EC station. Yes Croydon has it's issues but from your closed curtain, shire based, outsider narrative anyone would think I'm going to get shot and mugged every time I step outside my house. Complete dross

Dream on.

A senior officer has told the BBC

"Asked about how someone could enter the building while armed, former Det Ch Insp Chris Phillips said: "I think police officers are probably less likely to search people now with all the furore that goes on."

There will be a lot of backtracking from previous anti police comments. I see Dawn .Butler is leading the charge.

I know what you mean, I have never been intimidated in Croydon (although my brother in law was mugged). However, there is no denying the murder statistics. Let's face it, it is black on black, but no one allowed to say it.
It is worrying when it spills over and innocent people are killed. British police officers shouldn't have to worry too much about getting shot or stabbed, or killed. But they do, and that is down to current policy, which can be changed. People don't like Guliani or whatever from New York, for current policies - fair enough, whatever.
However, when he introduced zero tolerance, crime fell rapidly. It is the way to go for South London. Target the street crime, target the gangs aggressively, no pussy footing, some good old head bashing. More stop and search, 20 years for weapons, life for murder, ten years for gang membership. Crime halved within a week.
I'm disgusted and saddened an officer going about his job is dead. Whilst some gang banger will no doubt make a drill video about it. They want Bronx style - give them zero tolerance. Fund the police.

RIP to the officer and sincere, heartfelt condolences to his family and colleagues.

Broadly agree. This sort of thing will probably accelerate that approach, although it would have been better to have come before rather than after this.

I've only had two attempted mugging experiences, the last one was in Chaldon in 2001. Epicentre of petty and casual crime, the shires.

The Reverend Catherine Tucker, who was at the centre earlier, said: "The action taken against the police is really unacceptable but I also feel sorry for the perpetrator.

"Sadly, I am not surprised there has been a shooting in Croydon.

"There are tensions between the police and young people particularly in relation to stop and search and the way the police relate to the community."

Terrorist, allegedly. Walked in to hand himself in, strapped with ammunition and then proceeded to shoot before turning the gun on himself.

Don’t believe this is in the news yet but scary times for Croydon, if true.

Compare Croydon now to Croydon in the 1960s and '70s. Different planet now. Glad we left.

take a look at the property heatmap below. Look at all of Greater London.

Now and please explain to me why Croydon is just about the least hot place on the property map.

Numbers don't lie. Buyers are reluctant to invest in Croydon compared to most of Greater London.

Do crime levels contribute to this phenomenon ?
