It was down to Plan A (the only plan) and that was to get a 0-0 draw - and we got our come-uppance.

Whereas against Man Utd we went out to win, and with a little but of luck, we did.

Sure, Chelsea are a better team than United but that was no excuse for playing like we did and, please, don't blame the oppositions 'rough tactics' - we were simply tactically and effectively terrible.

There is hope - that Fulham, Burnley, Sheff Utd continue their own abysmal starts.

But considering the topsy-turvy results so far then absolutely nothing can be taken for granted.

Our next two games should be very enlightening ....

Clearly, you have hit the nail on the head and are absolutely correct!

I'm hoping Saturday was a one off after a largely improved start to the season. Last season Roy kept us up comfortably with an average squad. I do think Eze and Bats will improve us and once Cahill, PvA and Tomkins get back to fitness we will also be more solid at the back (PvA is a key part of our attacking threat which Mitchell has not yet been able to replicate).

I do think we should have taken more risks at Chelsea as they clearly lacked confidence until their first goal went in, but there you go. Personally I want to see Riedewald in the middle as I genuinely think he would significantly improve our midfield. Preseason he was the best player on the pitch and was really unlucky to pick up an injury just before the season kicked off. He looks far more assured on the ball than 12 months ago and has the build to compete physically. McArthur and McCarthy are like two little terriers, but their passing is not anywhere near the same standard as Jairo's and they often give the ball away too easily. I think it has to be one or the other.

Up top Ayew has struggled to replicate last season's form and I think Bats should be given a chance to try and win a starting place. Ayew and Wilf are perhaps too similar in that they are basically converted wingers.

90% of the time Chelsea are going to beat us however well we play, so I'm not going to overreact, but I just hope with Eze and Bats Roy finds a way to bring some entertainment back into our game as it was sorely missing last season.

I tend to agree with this TL. I was also struck with what Roy said afterwards, namely that we didn't attack enough. In other words, he didn't send the team out simply to defend, as a number of posters seem to assume.

I give Lampard credit for playing Kante and Jorghino who, along with their captain, broke up what few attempts we made at quick counter attacks.

Far too early to judge us this season. With Cahill, PvA and Tomkins back in training, we should look better come the end of the month.

Also we do need to see Batshuayi given a run (probably at Ayew's expense, assuming Wilf doesn't suddenly leave today).

Finally, I would only play ONE out of McArthur, McCarthy and Luka so that Jairo plays as well as Eze and Townsend/Ayew.

Pardew was extremely entertaining, he was basically the opposite of big Sam, Mr Hodgson is roughly halfway and where he should be in order to achieve success on the pitch with the players and funds he has available, if fans want to forget the enjoyable games we've had under Mr Hodgson and just concentrate on the not so then that's up to them but they mustn't keep on and on about the games where we didn't beat Chelsea fifteen nil.

and nearly got us relegated!

We lost 4-0 that says it all completely outclassed on the day, 29% possession, 4 shots, zero on target, corners 5 & fouls 13 (Chelsea 17), so Chelsea committed 4 more fouls than us hardly an excuse for losing the match. Average player ratings Chelsea 6.72 & CP 4.56 (Source BBC Sport).

You have to look at when they fouled us in relation to the score at the time OK, otherwise yes you're right, but I think about eight of our fouls towards them occurred after they had scored two of their goals which means frustration to me, you have to look at the fouls when the score was still 0-0 and with the possibility of us actually being able to cause them problems, you also have to faction in that we created their first for them and that we still held a threat towards them until the second so you have to take note of their fouling towards us until about then really don't you.

Yes he did, sadly for him he wanted to outscore teams with a somewhat disregard towards decent defending from the whole squad (which is what Mr Hodgson is being lambasted for doing in relation to Eze now, I can reassure all fans Eze is going to be very happy to be doing his defensive duties and understanding how important it is if he wants to better his career further up the league in about three seasons time.

nearly got us relegated is the same as 'just enough to stay up', which is our current mandate. Yet that's ok?

The point about the fouls is clear in your stats. We only had 29% of the ball and yet they fouled our players 17 times. If we had fouled as often as they did then our count should be about 50 fouls (and based on that probably down to 8 players!).
Chelsea basically cheated, not that I think they needed to. Of course the stats were in Chelsea's favour, simply based on the money spent.

We need to move the ball quicker if we want to avoid the professional fouls stopping our game.

Yes, top teams all do this and it's one of the main reasons they do well, when I was watching this game it was driving me insane especially the treatment they gave Eze, another thing is some of the fouls aren't even given ..at least three times Eze was left in a heap with the ref waving play on I remember Zaha clearly being bundled over in the second half and him standing up waving his arms about and me screaming at the TV again, thank you rollercoaster because I was beginning to think I was the only one to notice their tactics of stopping us before we even got going.
It must really drain our players on the pitch and then on here reading the crap fans write.

Different contexts. Had Pardew stayed till the end of the 2016/17 season, we almost certainly would have been relegated having won just 1 of 11 and in 17th place when he was sacked at Christmas 2016.

I actually liked Pardew and really wanted him to do well, after we beat Southampton 3-0 at home I was so sure we would turn the corner, hey ho, it did appear though didn't it that our scoring issues were causing our defending to nosedive but we will never know if things could've turned out, letting Murray leave was not Pardews best day.
Mr Hodgson needs more time for our injuries to return and for players to bed in before any more criticism is aimed at him I feel, Riedewald and Eze starting together on the pitch at the same time I hope is not too long away.

That would have been interesting as he would have certainly shown interest in Susanna!

You could say this and largely be correct. However, a couple of points: firstly, when you play as deep and defensive as us, when you break you get caught in your own half or near the halfway line. Therefore, teams can foul you and not risk much from the resulting free kicks. If we were set up a bit further up the pitch this would make it harder for teams to do it, as the free kicks could result in shots or decent deliveries into the box. That leads to the other thing that has been frustrating for a while now. We never go direct with free kicks, we barely take any quickly and we look like we don't practice them. That is down to management.
Consider that Ayew and Wilf were amongst the most fouled players last season, even consider we had 17 free kicks against Chelsea: one looked dangerous, nobody got to it.
We are poor at set pieces, and we could change this. If we're always going to be fouled in the middle of the park, then why not bring up the big guys and put the ball in the box? Other teams including top sides would. We could score loads more goals if only we bothered with free kicks. Passing sideways or backwards is just encouraging teams to foul us. We're not dangerous from set pieces and the opposition know it. They wouldn't do the fouls if we were.
