Sakho could easily lose 2 stone. It means he puts excessive load through his knees and is significantly more likely to injure them.

That is an aspect that he has the power to control and does not. For a player earning what he earns, I find that unacceptable.

He is by far our most talented central defender. He takes 6-8 games to get match fit, shows great promise, then gets injured.

It is tragic.

I disagree with this listing as it doesn't take into account overall qualities. Surely this has to be looked at as a ranking based on the following:

Positional awareness:
1 Cahill
2 Tomkins
3 Kouyate
4 Dann
5 Sakho
6 Kelly

Speed (or lack of it)
1 Cahill
2 Kelly
3 Sakho
4 Kouyate / Tomkins
156th Dann

Heading the ball:
1 Dann
2 Tomkins
3 Cahill
4 Sakho
5 Kelly
6 Kouyate

Passing out from the back:
1 Kouyate
2 Sakho
3 Cahill
4 Kelly / Tomkins
5 Dann

(Self) Confidence on the ball:
1 Sakho - I personally think he looks like Bambi
2 Cahill
3 Kouyate
4 Tomkins
5 Kelly
6 Dann

More worried about image/Instagram:
1 Sakho
2 Cahill
3 Kouyate
4 Kelly
280th Tomkins
281st Dann

EDIT: Forgot tackling

Tackling
1 Cahill / Tomkins
2 Dann / Sakho
3 Kouyate / Kelly

All IMHO.

One thing that I haven't necessarily thougth about is a players reading of the game. I believe Cahill is top here followed closely by Tomkins. Difficult to say how accurate you can be, but none of what I have written is definitive nor correct, just a quick assessment.

Based the above, overall Cahill is our best defender followed by Tomkins on par with Sakho, with Kouyate fourth. Dann just pips Kelly, but only coz he didn't score anything for speed.

The Internet says he is 13 stone. Maybe he could be a stone lighter if so.

For me Sakho is not just one of the worst performing defenders over the past two years but he is near enough one of the worst performing players in the whole squad over the last two years.

His balance is dreadful and he often scuffs his clearances.

His threat from set pieces is embarrassing and his ability to aim a header is a joke.

But what makes him truly shocking is his decision making.

Scott Dann has looked good in the games he has played and what i admire about Dann and Cahill are their ability to read the game. Tomkins is a warrior at the back and I would be happy with any of those 3 playing at the back...Kouyate will keep Sakho out of the team if they don't want him playing in midfield.

One of the most disappointing factors in this transfer window is that Sakho is still here.

I think Sakho, fully match fit, is an outstanding talent.

I doubt he has been fully match fit for 20 games at the club (loan period aside).

An unfit player is a bad player.

And I think he can look at himself for his lack of match fitness. You can't put that load through those knees playing top level football.

It's the 'possession lost' (5th out of 5) and 'errors leading to goals' (4th out of 5) that make him a liability. He is after all a defender and whilst he may have won more tackles etc. than the others, those 'wins' don't compensate for the above 'losses' IMO.

Do you understand those stats, 5th in possession lost, meaning the other 4 CB (all) lost more possession. 4th in errors leading to goals meaning 3 other CB had more errors.
Soldier is statistically the best defender, but not let that cloud your judgement.

Our midfield sit so deep that it sometimes hides any frailties in individual defenders, I think. All of the centre-backs are good in the air, but on the ground is a different story. Cahill is probably the best with the ball at his feet in terms of consistency, but on his day Sakho can hit a defence-splitting pass worthy of a top 4 club...on another day he falls over the ball leaving his clown feet flapping in the air.

I like Sakho because he has a big personality, but he always takes time to find his stride and during that period is often prone to several errors. If we want to play further up the field we do need more pace at the back though. Ward, Dann and Sakho are too slow to play a high line. Kouyate is quicker, but I'm not sure he'll be at the back once Cahill and Tomkins return.

Sadly these days Sakho seems to have one terrible performance for every three games he plays. Hopefully he stays fit and we get the Sakho of old for the remainder of his contract.

I wouldn’t call them stats until you have witnessed the data behind them. I’m an analyst by trade and I wouldn’t pay any attention to those “statements” without the supporting evidence.

In general I think some of the more prevalent football related stats are very poor indications of a players ability or performance levels.

Pass completion is a good example. What if one players tries to pass the ball forward and succeeds 80% of the time compared with a player that always passes the ball back to the goalkeeper with a 100% success rate...only for the goalkeeper to immediately lose possession.

Another example is assists or goal attempts created. You could argue assists gets more attention and yet for that to come off you have to rely on the receiving player scoring. Should that be a true reflection of a players ability to create? Depends on your point of view I suppose.

When it comes to Sakho and his stats...I would ask how do his stats compare over the past two years? Because a player that was immense that is now unfortunately quite the opposite can have varying stats over a long length of time as is the same for Benteke.

Do we judge Benteke on present ability? Or do we judge him on the whole?
