One arrested in threat to kidnap and kill Wichita mayor over COVID-19 mask mandate - [Link]

"A Wichita man has been arrested on suspicion of threatening to kidnap and kill Wichita Mayor Brandon Whipple over frustrations with the city’s mask ordinance, the mayor and police said Friday afternoon.

Meredith Dowty, 59, was booked into Sedgwick County Jail at 6:05 p.m., Friday, booking reports show. Police confirmed he is the suspect and said he could face a charge of criminal threat.

Whipple said he had been read a series of text messages received by another city official that asked about Whipple’s address and contained a detailed threat against his life.

The apparent motive was the suspect’s opposition to “masks and tyranny,” Whipple said.

“He said he was going to kidnap me and slash my throat and he needed my address because I needed to see the hangman — me and everyone who, something about tyranny,” Whipple said.

“It sounded like the person was very upset about pretty much mask mandates and he said something about not being able to see his mother because of COVID restrictions on elderly homes.”

A calm contributor

You could blame mental health issues caused by restrictions. This could be being replicated everywhere restrictions are prolonged.

If one or two people here end up in a bad way with covid-19, plenty of the relentless denier stuff that's been posted will look pretty shameful. Oh well, each to their own. I'll stick to posting links that I feel balance out the severe slant and conspiracy stuff.

That’s a pretty bad thing to post itself when we all know what the situation is and what we have to do. Never have I said people shouldn’t take precautions or take it seriously individually. Unless you think people can blame an individual’s opinion of country and government when there is the option to distance etc etc etc.

I think you’ve got carried away and you’re out of line tbh.

I know a young lad who practiced no distancing whatsoever and his dad got Covid from someone and couldn’t breathe and was only stopped from going into hospital because 999 advised them not to. Young lad carried on as before. Maybe his dad should feel as you describe.

If she became badly ill the cost is huge as is the opportunity cost of looking after others who couldn't help getting ill. And what is more, she is no longer paying into the system and will have stopped when she was 60.

If you want to gamble use your own resources, not those of others.

I would possibly agree, but this will be retired people who are more than likely shielding anyway. It’s like 30 small bubbles together. And their bubbles do t spread out onto more bubbles and people. Old people are effectively the end of the chain. Otherwise I might agree, although immunity or population spread is happening regardless, either behind the illusion of restrictions or just pure incompetence. It’s down to the rate it happens. They’ve probably mixed with very few people like I said. It’s either risky or living the bit of life they have left. Depends on your viewpoint.

If this, if that, why? The "second wave" is a mere ripple, and in areas that were affected less in the spring.

Here's an "if" for you. What if the NHS is not fit for purpose, and never has been?

And again, back off with the insults!

Yes, or you could even blame the individual for threatening to kidnap someone and slash their throat, but then that's just my take.

I am just reading that the police have been granted access to details of people told to isolate by the government's test and trace scheme.

BJ,

Why do you continue to label people who feel that the Government response to the CV issue is causing far more damage than CV itself as “deniers” and “conspiracy theorists”?

About time really. These people are potentially the start of that particular C19 strand. Stop them you stop that strand.

That's incorrect. I label people who claim the government wants to vaccinate us to "chip us" or to "ensure conformity" as conspiracy theorists. And from there inaccuracies branch out to an overly simplified idea that (flu) vaccines are 'useless and harmful' by supplying incomplete information on the topic, and being attacked for posting a far more comprehensive and balances view. My overriding take is that people are perfectly able to have a view on government approach, without adopting an unbelievably slanted take across the board that I can only assume they feel absolves them of any responsibility or impact of their own stance.

Whatever decisions are made are going to be worse than the status quo and so there will be no there's destined to be no shortage of blame. It may well be that the eventual impact of lockdowns and measures causes more damage than harm of the virus itself and I've said absolutely nothing that criticises that take. We can of course factor in that initially we didn't know what we were dealing with, whereas now we know more and have better treatments, and so I have sympathy for the views of cities under measures now. Just as I do those concerned that the situation might get worse (though I did highlight that deaths might be less alarmist metric to get behind, rather than case count, which was likely vastly higher than it is now earlier in the year).

But regardless of what people think of the government approach, it pays to have an outlook of the virus itself, treatments and of individual takes that offer a degree of balance and takes on board information from multiple perspectives rather than adopt a skewed conclusion and spends all day hunting for information that supports it. I'm not the one on here wagging my finger at people who shield if they need to or have a degree of social life if they don't. I'm criticising those who ignore anything that is contrary to their comfort blanket. When you start getting people with X-Files like takes on vaccines, or denying numbers only in ways that's convenient to their outlook while ignoring everything else, and mocking vulnerable people holding out hope for vaccines then yes I'll speak up about those things. Doctored images, disinformation, you gain nothing here when you point it out as I have done, because people prefer the comfort of an untruth they agree with.

Well yes, if you're implying that his son may have given him covid, then maybe his dad should feel as I do. His son taking into account his father health would certainly be a more responsible attitude then exposing him to increased risk. Still, people do as they do and until its close to home many evidentially view it all as something that isn't 'real' in any meaningful sense.
