For all the stick he gets, he was a £3m signing to play understudy for Speroni in 2014.

Going back to 2004. We've managed to get incredible value out of our goal keepers.

Vessen - Loan
Kilray - Free
Speroni - £1m
Hennessey - £3m
Mandanda - Free
Guiata - Free
Butland - £1m

We have indeed, although it’s rather ironic that Wayne is the most expensive keeper we’ve ever signed

Edit....cancel that, a quick bit of research and it looks like we paid more for Alex McCarthy (£4.41m from QPR - Transfer market)

A million for Nigel Martyn was pretty good too.

Think you’ll find that was a record fee for a goalkeeper at the time..!!

Martyn was the first £Million pound goalkeeper in English football.
It seems a relative pittance now but he was signed in 1989 pre-PL days.
I was present at his debut when we were defeated 3-2 by Tottenham at Selhurst Park.
We sold him to Leeds, when George Graham was their manager, for just shy of £2.5 Mill.

As was the fee Coventry paid for Bill Glazier - a sad day in the chris123 house way back then.

£35,000 I think.

The positive was that Bill's departure paved the way for the emergence of John Jackson once he showed he was better than Glazier's initial replacement Tony Millington.

Earlier this year on the CPFC website I saw an extended video of a goalkeeper training session. Although it covered one part of one day's workout, the 8-minute sample easily convinced me that Guaita's spring, strength, reactions and secure hands were markedly superior to Hennessey's. Hennessey was fine – in games, we've seen that he is good and at times excellent – but to this former GK, the video didn't lie. Touch after touch, Guaita instilled far more confidence.

Guaita gets my vote.

And if he becomes even half the shot-stopper Speroni was, we will have many more great adventures.

Hennessey is good. But i'm not sure if good is enough for the Prem.

Napoleon Bonaparte favoured generals who were lucky. We should find a new keeper who is lucky.

Eze Peasy at Anfield....

Vic Rouse & Tony Millington - also Welsh international goalies. I have some good memories of Vic Rouse who was good for his time - and helped us out of the 4th division.

I struggle with this whole debate and indeed with the big man generally.

People say he is no good yet he is a record breaking international fast approaching a record caps tally for his country and has regularly kept clean sheets and that country has had major tournament success.

Yet he is not regarded as even a half decent keeper.

It seems as a group of fans we have our favourites and that was Jules. So much so there has been a fair degree of ranting about the re issue of the No 1 Jersey.

£4.41m and we should've kept him, he lost his place after that 2-1 loss against Liverpool when he miskicked the ball after being one up and Benteke scored that penalty! Typically he has gone on and become quite brilliant for Southampton
