I’ve supported Palace since I was 9 years old. Started to start paying attention in the mid 90’s and become pretty obsessed since.

During the entirety of my following, Palace have been nicknamed ‘The Eagles’.

Now I appreciate they were formally known as ‘The Glaziers’ and I was just interested in how fans of the time felt during the transition between the two titles?

Was there uproar? Grumbling? Barely audible muttering? Or was it just generally accepted?

The question is based on standard curiosity based on if a team attempted something like that in the modern day, I suspect there would be uproar.

I Look forward to any comments or recollections that anybody may have.

I suppose at nearly 68 years of age and being a supporter since the 60s, I could be described as a "Mature fan" !

The nickname was changed by Malcolm Allison in the early 70s, inspired by the Benfica 'Eagles'.

Certainly many moons ago and at my 'Ripe' age recollection of yesteryear can be somewhat challenging however I don't have memories of any mass protestations due to the change.
There were certainly mumbles and grumbles but one has to remember that in that era there was not the social media interaction, Twitter,Facebook, sites such as HOL and the like, so any major antipathy was not so visible to the multitudes.

I was just starting to go regularly when these changes happened. I think they kicked in just as Palace were relegated from the then Division 1.

I don't remember anyone being upset. Perhaps having just been relegated and with the excitement of Malcolm Allison as manager, it seemed like a god time for a change.

I immediately liked the new red and blue strip. I bought a red and blue barred scarf at the first home game that season and I still wear it to games.

I think that first home game was Notts County and we lost 4-1 and went on to be relegated again.

Different topic, but I do miss the excitement of being in playoff contention or dire relegation battles.

I don’t recall there being much of a protest at the time of the change of the club crest.
I’m sure it would be very different if a similar change at Palace was attempted these days.
The internet and 24 hour media coverage has encouraged fans to be more vociferous in general.
Look at the protests from Cardiff and Hull fans when the owners attempted to fool around with their respective heritages.
Personally I liked the old Glaziers crest which are on a couple of old programmes I retain.
But I’m quite happy with the Eagles too.

I am 69 and been going since mid 60's and don't remember any grumbles or protests, think we just accepted it as being a bit of a new era with Mr Allison at the helm.

I am 64 and do not remember any issues. Think fans were pleased we had Big Mal and just accepted it
