I was just starting to go regularly when these changes happened. I think they kicked in just as Palace were relegated from the then Division 1.

I don't remember anyone being upset. Perhaps having just been relegated and with the excitement of Malcolm Allison as manager, it seemed like a god time for a change.

I immediately liked the new red and blue strip. I bought a red and blue barred scarf at the first home game that season and I still wear it to games.

I think that first home game was Notts County and we lost 4-1 and went on to be relegated again.

Different topic, but I do miss the excitement of being in playoff contention or dire relegation battles.

Do you remember when the play offs were first introduced, the relegated team(from above) would play the lower league team, wanting promotion, so possibly still keep their place.
I think this ran for only a couple seasons initially?

I think this system was dropped after there was huge crowd trouble when Charlton of div 2 beat Leeds of div 1. I see the logic of the system but prefer the current set up.

This game was in the season when we never won a game until November.Alan Whittle scored in a 1-0 away win at Bristol C to secure our first victory.

I remember it well! I used to live in west London and went to QPR that day with a mate. Coming away from the ground someone with a transistor radio said it had been an unusual day as all London clubs had won. I remember jumping for joy - at last Palace had won a game!

I have been going to Selhurst for 61 years . In the early years you never heard " come on you Glaziers " it was always " come on the Palace " . When Big Mal rebranded it to The Eagles (with the blessing from the board ) you then heard " come on you Eagles " . Even though we lost a lot of game under Big Mal they were fun years .

I don't actually remember hearing that. But what's interesting is that our modern nickname is the only one (at least that I can think of) which is chanted by the crowd: "Eagles, eagles........" We don't hear that in relation to the Gunners, Hammers, Toffees, Canaries, etc. Or do those strange people in Brighton also do it? And then there are those clubs that don't seem to have a nickname at all: nonentities like Liverpool and Southampton.

I have been a supporter since 1958 and I remember we had a goalkeeper called Bill Glazier but he was not around when Allison was manager otherwise he would have had to change his name

Jimmy Hill paid a world record fee for a goalie to sign Bill.

Well I'm relatively young at 60 but my Dad started taking me in 1966 after we won the WC.

Big Mal was very popular and I don't remember hearing much about our name change. I think there was more disgruntlement with the change from Claret and Blue (thanks to Aston Villa) to Red and Blue.

The nickname that gets used the most must be Leicester City. Commentators seem contractually obligated to mention Foxes several times.
Sean Bean has a tattoo saying 100% Blade to show his allegiance to Sheffield United which is better than 100% Owl, 100% Canary or 100% Toffee. Or 100% Pensioner if Chelsea still use that.
