Taking the knee (LOCKED)

There was a certain amount of tut-tutting in the Radio 5 studio when it was reported earlier this afternoon that there had been booing at Millwall when the players knelt. Like almost everyone else, I'm strongly anti-racist, but, also like many others, I equally strongly believe that this charade has outlived its usefulness - if it ever had any. And if the bevaviour at Millwall starts a trend across the country and the authorities then decide that they have no choice but to bring it to an end, I for one will rejoice. (By the way, am I right in saying that MOTD now shows taking the knee only before the first match? I'm not at my most alert when the programme comes on, and I'm normally dropping off as it continues.)

Taking a knee to support what exactly? There was virtually no racism in football before all this crap started and suddenly we adopt this habit from American football and a culture that bares no relation to us in terms of racial issues. Apparently colour doesn't matter and we shouldn't define people by their race. Someone should tell the sporting authorities.

The Millwall fans have just expressed how most feel about an organisation which has nothing to do with the original intentions of boot it out, which is something I think we are all in favour of.

Booing is pathetic. Anyone can see it is just making things worse. If you tell people they are rubbish, then don't be surprised if that's how they will be.

Taking the knee was a con. Well done, you persuaded footballers to get down on a knee but at the end of the day all we are interested in is booting out racism, not showing support for a facist organisation. Let’s get back to the important stuff like kicking out racism, not supporting organisations that want to defund our Police and pitch white against black.
