That's a bit unfair. People show their love in different ways.

That's what I tell herself, anyway...

I fully expect us to lose both (so if we get any result it will be Xmas all over again!) therefore defeats in those games will be of less concern to me than the actual manner of defeat and the performances, which have been shocking of late.

Sadly, its just not of late. The performance at home over the past couple of years have been awful. How many goals did we score in the first half of games? For RH to say we have our strongest squad & yet he sticks with the same team, formation, etc is a joke. He wont play Meyer etc

Thanks, but in fairness I said that bringing in a manager nobody had heard of was a gamble. I used not having worked in the Premier league as an example of why a coach might be an unknown quantity.

Nuno managed huge clubs (Valencia and Porto) before Wolves, whilst Bielsa is a massively well known coach who apart from managing Argentina, Chile and half a dozen big clubs in France, Spain, Italy and South America is also constantly cited as an inspiration by the likes of Guardiola and Pochettino. They're hardly unknowns.

Hasenhutl was a bit left field I grant you, and right now it's doing well. But that's one unknown to have
done well in this league. The list of unknowns to have failed is far, far longer, hence my observation that going left field is a gamble.

He was very well known in Germany having guided RB Leipzig to 2nd place in the Bundesliga behind Bayern Munich so he did come to Southampton as a proven manager in a top flight.

Before that he got Ingolstadt promoted to the Bundesliga.

I think Roy should be given the respect to see out the season and start a rebuild from there.

I do keep seeing about how Roy has the best squad we have ever had and he is wasting our talent.

I just don't think our squad at the moment is very strong. I honestly love the team and effort is not questioned imo
however honest assessment would be:

GK -> Strong and good depth with Butland no.2
Def -> Aging. Tomkins when fit is very good. The rest distinctly avg and some for prem standards pretty poor
Mid -> Lacking creativity and pace. Aging also. Eze fantastic prospect
Forwards -> Zaha our star man creates something out of nothing and he papers over cracks in our team. Benteke gone back to old form after showing a spark. Ayew our top scorer last season but how many prem teams would he get into? Batman great finisher but offers little else

Okay waffling now but what i mean to say is... i don't think our squad is as good as we like to believe and we are 'probably' about where we could expect to be.

I hope Roy goes at the end of the season and hope for a rebuild but it might get worst before it gets better!

Our squad is the strongest ever if it was 5 years ago. A lot of our players are past their sell by date through age or constant injuries hence the lack of pace and intensity in our play

I keep reading its the best squad we have ever had and Roy isnt getting the best out of them etc. It maybe our best squad in peoples eyes, but up against other squads in the Premier league, its a squad that should be lower to middle in the league. Our best player doesnt interest any of the top 6 clubs, just work your way down the squad from there to see, who would get in any team in the top 10.

That's probably about right. And to think some on here seemed to honestly think we might go for Pochettino or Tuchel...

My only observation that Parish may not require an entertaining style of football if that is inconsistent with staying up. Hence CPFC are the only club to have employed the 'Big Three' of defensive, ultra pragmatic coaching: Pulis, Allardyce and Hodgson.

When you put it like you have, the reality of our position and the logic in retaining Hodgson (who achieves results with far more limited resources than most) is more clear than ever, whilst the likelihood of some dashing young thing being able to come in and move us up a gear to two is shown for the pipe dream it is.

If we manage to survive under Mr Hodgson he will have secured survival for 4 seasons.
There will be little appetite by the club for a change and providing he wishes to continue and not retire I suspect his contract will be extended.

Next season could be our toughest in trying to retain our place, given that a number of our aged players will probably not be at the club for obvious reasons, we might of course lose Zaha and replacements will have to be found without significant backing in the transfer market. There will be a re-building job to be done.

Perhaps Mr Hodgson will decide that it is in his interests not to be at the club and will politely decline a new contract!! Perhaps this scenario has already unfolded!

I cannot remember a time when fans have hated the negative style we play so much.

What must the youth players think? They NEVER get a chance with Roy.

The cup game V Wolves was an opportunity to blood some kids (Roy knew we'd lose anyway) but no.

That's the thing I really dislike about him.

I have now sufficient funds to last me the rest of my life. Provided I don't buy anything.

Okay...since you asked.

Guiata
Tomkins
Luka
Eze
Zaha

And ironically probably:

Riederwald
Meyer
PVA (wing back)

PVA (wing back) - I like what you did there

I'll give you Riederwald, swap him with Luka as he has been awful for almost a year now. I'm annoyed whenever I see him in the line up, he hasn't deserved to be there for a while now.

Meyer has been shown up by Eze. Both brought in to do a similar job in the same position and Eze has shown attacking intent whenever he gets the ball, whereas Meyer passes backwards and sideways, never looks to play forward - I was once all for Meyer but he really has been a let down.

PVA could be a top 10 club player for his attacking attributes (wing back as you said) but defensively he lets himself down with lack of concentration. Which is why he's fallen down the league to us..

Tomkins to injury prone unfortunately.

So 4 players out of a possible 23/25 man squad..

With our current points total we’ look likely to ensure safety with four more wins and a few draws.
This should not be beyond us with 21 games remaining.
With this in mind I would expect Hodgson to stay at least for the remainder of the season.
Perhaps a more appropriate heading for this thread I would be
‘Roy out at the end of the season?’
Personally I would like him to leave then while acknowledging he has done a sound job.
If the club and Hodgson are of the same mind,, that leaves Parish plenty of time to source a successor.

this is what I find utterly depressing, the notion that because we have scraped survival, in diminishing form year-on-year, that we can expect to do the same for another year. It's a car crash waiting to happen. Quite a few fans (and this isn't aimed at you, Willo) seem to be happy to court relegation via sticking to what we know under Hodgson, but not by employing a manager that could breathe new life into the club. Personally I'd rather we gave it another go (trying to move the club on rather than stand still) and be prepared that there is a small chance it could lead to failure and relegation but I'm much more optimistic that it would break the cycle of mundane football we're currently experiencing.

It was a hell of a lot more exciting in the Championship, better football, more star players, and chasing that Premier League dream is so much more exciting that treading water like we are now.

OR, we may just move up to being a solid Prem team that's looking up rather than trying to grind to the minimum points each season.

I'm not suggesting Roy goes mid-season, it's too late for that now. But I pray to God our succession planning is in advanced stage and we have a new guy waiting in the wings as soon as the season finishes. In an ideal world Roy would announce his retirement before the end of the season, we can lock this thread, and start a new one speculating about the new manager.
