They didn't need to. And I suspect Liverpool wish they'd saved some of their luck in front of goal for more recent games.

Benteke is a very easy and convenient scapegoat but Roy has ruined him. In the five Premier League seasons prior to Roy arriving, Benteke's lowest goal tally was nine and as high as 19. Indeed, he scored 15 league goals for us the previous season.

Then Roy arrives, installs a tactical philosophy that completely starves the strikers of any decent service and, lo and behold, Benteke scores nine goals in the following 3.5 seasons. No wonder his confidence is shot.

It isn't just Benteke. Ayew managed nine last season during a purple patch but, otherwise, has been average. Sorloth couldn't score for us. Wickham couldn't score for us. I honestly don't think Lewandowski or Kane would score for us, such is the negativity of our system.

And it doesn't have to be this way. On the rare occasion that we do actually decide to have a go, we usually play well and win, the victories over Leeds and WBA spring to mind.

I think we massively miss Cabaye and any attempt to bring in a technical midfielder to replace him (Meyer, Riedewald) hasn't worked as Roy has just gradually alienated them, preferring industrious midfielders instead.

Nobody is demanding that we go out and try to play like vintage Barca but lets at least not play like vintage Stoke. We have to show some ambition because after eight years in the league we're still playing like a newly promoted minnow.

It's no wonder that Wilf wants to leave and we keep missing out on players like Bowen and Benrahma to West Ham. Even playing for that bunch of lunatics must be more entertaining than playing for Roy. And don't say that they're going for the wages because we have the seventh highest wage bill in the division.

We’ll have to agree to differ re Benteke. As I’ve posted before he missed 20 from 23 good chances in Roy’s first season and plenty of decent judges reckoned he got the yips. His hold up play is also non existent.

Last nights performance was completely unacceptable but to me there is a quality and age problem. A year too far for too many who are no longer good enough. Cahill was excellent last season but has gone. Tomkins great but made of glass Dann, Ward, Townsend, Luka etc

Some also with an eye on the exit door. I think Fat Soldier Sakho and Van Aanholt downed tools some time ago. Riedewald flatters to deceive IMO and isn’t the answer either preferring too many safe square passes.

The point made by other posters that once Roy’s teams lose defensive organisation and spirit then there isn’t much left is a fair one IMO and that is the biggest concern regarding recent poor performances. I also think that changes in formation won’t necessarily bring about the desired improvement.

Despite struggling to get results I think Fulham have improved massively and look as though they may have enough about them to get out of trouble

It’s a results business. Parish isn’t a fool and IMO will be thinking about a change just to shake things up and and halt the downward slide.

I'm interested to know when you think that would be and what constitutes 'back on track'?

I think that we'll be hard pushed to win more than 4 points out of any 9, which might be enough to secure premiership survival but not enough to call the season a success or even deny our slow demise. Our current situation isn't a blip - it's exactly where we are right now and the direction we've been heading for a long time.

We’re struggling because we’ve stopped playing Roy’s defensive 4:4:2 effectively. It’s unlikely to be because Roy is being more expansive. More likely because we don’t have the personnel to play it. Luca and Mac are getting too slow, Eze isn’t good at it, and Townsend has lost his pace. If I understand the modern lingo we used to play an effective low block unlike the top teams who favour a high block but now we play a no block!

As long as we’re clear of relegation Roy won’t be sacked. His contract is up at the end of the season so deciding not to renew it avoids sacking him and allows him to leave with dignity having been a loyal servant to the club.

If SP is any good he will be having discussions with potential replacements now. Difficult to know who that might be now that Chelski have beaten us to Tuchel! Seriously, our next manager has to be a championship manager looking to step up.

Final crazy thought! Benteke is helping Wilf in his more central role. I’d keep him til the end of the season rather than sell him to BFS.

A very good point and one I often ponder

I arrived at the following conclusion:

Roy sees the same problems that we do. He knows who his best players are, and what they must focus on to address the problems we all see. He wonders why we have these problems as we worked on avoiding these problems during training all week. Roy thinks that if we work on avoiding the problems again this week, in the same way that we did last week, then we'll avoid them in the next game.

I concur with the sentiments apropos our 'Dad's Army' squad and for some while I have been asserting their limitations due to the passage of time.I have been concerned for some time that they would be exposed this season and alas this is the case.

Mr Hodgson have faced shot and shell but he has to work with a squad that is deteriorating before our very eyes. Many are well past their best and will not recover their form of yesteryear.

For the record, vintage Stoke played better than us.

It was dull as anything but it was clear as day what they were trying to do. Sign two huge strikers, play 4 CBs in defence, play people like Matthew Etherington and Rory Delap who were limited in ability but could put a cross/throw in and low and behold, they became difficult to beat and scored goals from crosses.

I genuinely have no idea what our plan is.

It seems to be pass it around side to side and backwards for as long as we can until Wilf becomes available and does something special. When he doesn't play, we seem to have the tactical intent of a Sunday league side who put 11 players out and just see how it goes. Go behind and hope one of their lot make a mistake/Wilf does it himself.

I'm just hoping we somehow get enough points out of the next 6 games so we can focus on having someone in place as soon as possible and certainly weeks before pre-season starts.

The number of games in which we're not even competitive is ludicrous.

Roy was again too slow to ring the changes.

We were one again outnumbered in midefield and let in goals from set plays. This has happended too often.

Bringing on Batsman, Ayew and Jairo did shake up things for the better. A move made to late.

Still I think Roy may have stumbled onto something good to take forward.

I liked the way Batsman and Ayew worked in tandem. Zaha, and Eze on the wing with the freedom to move into the centre areas worked well with Ayew filling in where they left gaps.

Moreover Ayew's industrty ensured we werent overrun in midefield by dropping deep where necessary.

The defence also looked a lot stronger with Jario infront of them, filing in the spaces vacated by our full back when needed.

This means no Milivojevic nor townsend.

We have been letting in far too many goals from set plays. It seems if we dont have Tomkins marshalling the defence they go absent. Cahill is shadow of the player he was last season nd would prefer Dann in his stead.

Roy has his favorites and is slow to change. Hopefully the last 10 minutes of last nights game showed how flexible we can be. That said defence is still a worry.

To change manager now I think would be a mistake but if we are to then ithas to be somebody like Brenford's Thomas Frank.

I think the board and Roy are on the same page. Maybe a few lines apart but the same page.

If we don’t get a win on Saturday then Next Tuesday’s game at Newcastle could be interesting - not for the game which could be the dullest of the season but there are some parallels - chairmen both unwilling to replace an increasingly unpopular manager. Neither would want to lose that, especially if Fulham get some points in the meantime

I don't believe that at this juncture there is any appetite whatsoever to rid Mr Hodgson of his services before the end of the season.
