I think that's a pretty fair post.

The one point that's missing from it and much of the debate is that Roy is 73. Even if we were to keep him, every season starts with the idea that it might be his last. For as long as that continues, we can only be treading water because we can't ever have a 2 year plan.

We've got three additional years out of the league from Roy and for that I think he'll get credit. I still struggle with the question of were we to go down this year, what do we have to show for it? We'll soon be able to say a new academy, but it'd be a comparatively poor training ground, a squad poorly equipped to do well in a 46 game Championship season due to age and contract lengths, and no stadium progress. As long as we have a manager on the verge of retirement, I don't feel we're able to plan and therefore progress.

On the basis that Roy will go sometime 'soon', that time being prior to June 30th 2021 feels as good a time as any.

You see, I don't really think Roys age, and the lack of longer term planning it implies, matters these days.

It used to be that a manager came in and wanted to build a team over two or three years, signing the players he liked and selling the ones he didn't in accordance with his medium-term vision for the team, but that all stopped happening years ago.

There is no such thing as a 'Manager' anymore. They are all first team coaches albeit under various job titles. From one season to the next (or perhaps from one transfer window to the next) they simply look at the players the club provides, and try to implement what they believe is a system best suited to the clubs objectives.

I don't believe any coach or manager in the league plans long term. If they do, they are either optimistic or perhaps foolish.

On a similar point, I'd be surprised if a player signed principally to work with a particular manager these days. They probably used to, but now you'd be a fool to think any coach is likely to stay in position for the length of the contract you're signing!

For me with the players we have it has got to be a front 3 of Zaha,Benteke or Mateta and Eze. Ayew can step into any of the positions when needed or as a sub.

I know everyone has their own views but I would happily watch 18 awful games to just stay in the division and hopefully start again next year on a better footing.

Problem is we say this every year and nothing changes. We just waste season after season trying to stay in this division. Treading water until Zaha leaves and we finally get what we deserve.

We've been awful for a long time now, and no one would miss us if we got relegated, Zaha apart, we offer nothing to this division now, apart from the odd fluke result.

I don't think this team is any better than the one that Pulis came in, and kept us up with. So many poor player's not worth there salt, and yet come Saturday I'll be watching these same, stale, tired old faces, trying to nick a result.

I agree with this and think the manager's role in overseeing the anticipated "overhaul" of the squad is being overthought / overstated at times.

However, does the chairman see it that way too? Clearly not.

There is no joy or excitement with Palace at the moment- there hasn't been for some considerable time.
Last night, it was great to take a lead, be in front, be momentarily on the front foot!

However, we know the outcome!

Who's fault?

In any organisation, the leader has to take responsibility. Therefore that falls to SP and RH.

Guaita has literally saved us many, many times, but he seems to have lost all confidence. Butland needs to be brought in now.

Mitchell and Clyne in the main, have done well.

I understand why Kouyate played defence earlier in season, BUT he is not a defender- he needs to go.

For us to score we need to create chances. Townsend is at the end. Why is he playing?
Mac works so hard and at least appears that he wants to win.
Luca is not effective anymore and is an accident waiting to happen with his discipline.

Eze is a star in the making. Please play him in his right position. Why is he stuck out on the left??

Zaha is NOT an out and out striker. Please play him appropriately.

We have nothing to lose (apart from Prem status!), so please play Mateta against Wolves. We NEED something different, but we need to create the chances.

Roy OUT- We need a different manager to ignite and save our season before it is too late.

Supporting Palace used to be fun- this is torture!

Mate great post - sums up my feelings and thoughts exactly..!!

Too many square pegs in round holes to fit Roy's rigid systems, tactics and formations, so IMO the players have subsequently lost faith and stopped playing for Roy..!!

You can see it from the way we play - it's as plain as the nose on your face..!!

Look Roy has done great for us, but that's the point "has" - now it simply ain't working and it's time to move on..!!

I also agree the lack of comments from SP/the board is deafening - something ain't right..!!

On watching Palace becoming torturous, it's beyond that at this point in time it's embarrassing..!!

Come on Steve grasp the nettle and replace Roy now..!!

I think this is the crux of this current split between supporters over Roy.

For most of my life supporting Palace has been about the hope (often dashed or squandered) that we might become an established top flight side, and before now none of us had ever experienced Palace staying this long in the top flight.

Well, turns out this is what it looks like.

This is what Coventry did for all those years.

Watching our team play effective but turgid anti-football is not what everyone dreamed of, I get that, and I hate it too. The split is not to do with whether Roy plays anti-football (he does, as did Pulis and Allardyce), it's between those who see that if it wasn't Roy delivering anti-football it would be someone else, because anything else is likely to result in relegation, and those who don't. Or perhaps just find it too dispiriting to accept.

I feel like some of the angst on this topic comes from folk having to come to terms with the reality of what was always not only uncharted territory, but also the promised land - being an established top flight club.

Sometimes the journey is more fun than the destination.

It wasn’t that long ago we were scrambling a result against Sheffield Wednesday to stay in the Championship! There are a lot and I mean a lot of people on here that have lost all perspective about the club, the Manager, the Directors and the quality of player we can afford to buy.

We are punching above our weight period. I’m confident we will stay in the division and Roy will go and we will get a younger, hungrier manager. But at the moment I wouldn’t want Roy to go.

Really not sure about this article. Opinions are like aresholes of course, everyone's got one, but I don't see the evidence in support of the writers view.

If the club being pulled out of administration, kept afloat, promoted, kept in the top flight longer than ever before, reaching a cup final, buying and renovating our own training ground, replacing a knackered poor quality youth team set up with an academy on a par with anything in the UK, achieving planning permission for a new main stand and yet still complying with FFP rules and not, for once, taking any mad gambles with the future survival of the club results from a lack of leadership, then I for would be happy to see more of it.

An interesting post, but I think it is much simpler than that. I don't think anyone is expecting us to be in the top 3, or vying for Europe at the moment. What it is, is the gutless, couldn't give a toss, negative performances that are a direct result of this current manager's tactical approach. I'm not advocating all out gung-ho attack, but would just like to see a motivated team looking like it knows what it's doing with a few leader type figures on the pitch.
Pulis played "anti-football" so it is said, but that set of players played with organisation, heart, and purpose, the total opposite of this current bunch.
It mirrors the England performances under Hodgson, clueless, despite having a decent set of players to work with.
Palace are currently are in that phase under Hodgson.

I don't agree that the anti football Roy plays would be the same no matter who was in charge... Maybe it's my rose tinted glasses but I can't ever recall the way we play being anywhere near as bad as this under Pulis and Sam...
