Thinking about buying one and learning to play it,

Are they really expensive?
Easy to learn and worth buying?

Anyone play one?

If you don't know what you're doing be careful, because you need to know how to keep it in tune. Think about starting on a clarinet - fingering is similar, and much easier to learn on.

I think that 'playing a saxophone' must be a euphonium......

anyway, was there not at one time, a scheme, whereby you could rent/learn a sax and then buy at the end of a contract ?

Chris123 is right. Get a clarinet first. Much cheaper to purchase, and easier to learn on.

IMHO it has a nicer sound too, but it is definitely the way to start.

Have lessons first.... and try clarinet and trumpet first. I reckon it tough so don't go throwing your dosh away unless your loaded.

get a job doing classical music in an orchestra.

that way, you get to sit for two hours, and only bang out a couple of notes all night.
