Last enjoyable game was actually our 1-2 defeat at home to Liverpool last season. Despite the loss, I was pleased with how we took the game to them and we were very unlucky to lose.

Prior to that (and excluding the Bournemouth goal fest in that meaningless last game of the 2018/19 season) I really enjoyed it when we beat Leicester 1-4 at the King Power. We were clinical and lethal that day - proper counter-attacking football and under Hodgson!!

I completely get this. For me the football is almost secondary, it’s the occasion and sense of tradition.

For myself it started by going with my grandad, following them in the late seventies, he was a lovely man who is always in my thoughts.

Over the years I’ve been with all manner of people, ex girlfriends, old mates, many who I have lost touch with over the years and now I go with a great little bunch of lads including my own son.

When I think of all the people who have come and gone over the years, the funny thing is, Palace are one of the few constants in my life.

It is true, you go to Selhurst to watch Palace not to see a good game, I worked as a teaching assistant in the Study Centre when it opened in 99/00 and got used to the magical walk to work, especially if I got a 249 instead of a 159 and made my way down Whitehorse lane from South Norwood Hill instead of going via the clock tower and the jerk chicken place. I get to about six games a season if I'm lucky these days and it's all about the event, a good game is a bonus. Haven't seen too many barnstormers in recent years, apart from the Brighton game there was a 3-2 at home to Watford in the Darren Ambrose days and that 2-2 at home to Southampton with Dowie was a special game. but they're not too recent.

Your post and the OP have combined to bring a particular memory to mind. I don't know that it was the last time I enjoyed a live Palace match as such, but I reckon the most intense emotion I ever experienced at a game was when Puncheon scored in the cup final.

I went to Wembley in 1990 with my Dad and his Dad, who as a boy had been at the famous White Horse final (in 1923 I think?). We sat behind the goal Wright scored his second goal into, quite high up. The image of that day has remained burned into my memory. The pitch, the noise, the colour. I was a young season ticket holder by then, and was at every game on the cup run bar Cambridge, but this was something else. I particularly remember the singing of Abide with me. I'd never heard it before, and it went straight through me.

Fast forward a quarter of a century and there I am, behind the goal Wright scored his second into, quite high up. Abide with me is being sung, followed by a colossal, emotional noise from the Palace end. Fair play to the fanatics for the display that day, and to everyone for the support we gave. This time I'm with my own son. My Dad was going to be there and complete the cycle, but he was poorly with cancer treatment by then and just couldn't do it. I was thinking of him, and of a mate of mine, a big Palace fan who was, though only in his fourties, also dying of cancer and in his last days. We don't all get to hang around to see these games, I thought to myself. Later, on what was literally his last night, that dying friend told me that he had, in fact, been there in a wheelchair, with his Dad, and medical equipment.

When Puncheon scored... Well, it was more than a goal to me.

It's all that stuff isn't it? I mean, I do wish we could play better football and win more often, but that's only secondary really.

Anyway, what? No, shut up, I've just got dust in my eye that's all.
