I have been a supporter of Palaces since l worked on the gates as a kid, over 50 years ago,and seen many great days and some awfull ones, but l cannot remember a time when there is so much negativity with the club,it is strange really,we are in the Prem but no one seems to be enjoying it,l can understand that,we are playing rather poor football at the moment with the odd reprise now and again, but my perspective on things is that we are in trouble this year, somewhere along the line it. Has all gone wrong, relying on one man I.e.Zaha, not addressing the obvious centre forward situation, and playing hang on football, which we have for the past few seasons, has created a ground swell of unhappiness, sometimes it seems to me that the football was more fun maybe 20 years ago or more, not quite as glamorous, but people laughed and enjoyed it more,l think striving for success can be good but it doesn't bring the enjoyment it used to?

Yes, you feel as I do. Think we as fans should not expect so much. Personally, I am dreading tonight's game which should not be the case as after all we are supposed to enjoy it!! The club is probably in the strongest position it has ever been both staff and financial wise but still, we want more. What is required and I have been saying this for 5 years we need investors who want success not a return so much on their investment. Need help like Leicester or Abramovitc from Chelsea. Fingers crossed for tonight eh!! COYP

Agree with this .And feel that the amount of our time in the premiership and heartaches etc to get there was it all worthwhile ? Apart from an academy we don't seem to have progressed as much that I would have imagined when we beat Watford on that so called 100mil game at Wembley. Same stadium, and 5he although so called better players on mega wages the football especially of late has been dire .

Sport is great but a percent of people over invest in it for various reasons.

I say don't care too much about something that doesn't care back.

That way you can enjoy your sport for what it is....a pastime for your benefit.

Not being able to go to a game is not helping. When you are there you shout and cheer at your team to "help the players" you feel like you are part of the team.

TV is the 4th wall it just isn't the same that plus we are playing crap.

It's all very philosophical mate. We could talk about it forever. I've certainly felt happier as a fan, I think a lot of it is that nothing has really got better in the Premier League. We haven't seen the academy yet, and we all thought a new stand would be done by now. But, typical us, we've actually done nothing. Hopefully we will.
I was thinking why it's less fun these days. One obvious is Covid, we can't go, we can't get together and we're all getting pissed off anyway.
Another though, I don't think anyone has spoken about is: I don't think we quite have the right mix of characters around the whole club anymore.
With Jordan there was always something, even Uncle Ron. Coppell was often depressed but he would wear his heart on his sleeve. There were some right characters around the management and the team. The list is endless really and goes right up to today. (Hashish, Cannon, Hilaire, El Tel, Big Mal there are hundreds - even Jedi, Paddy, Damo recently).
Now look at us, even Parish can't be bothered to say anything. We are soulless except for the fans, and we are getting fed up too. Roy is bland, press conferences are bland media exercises, our squad seem to want to talk about racial equality more than playing for us. They're not South London and Proud, frankly, I don't think they give a sh1t.
Anyway, I won't rant more. Where's our characters now? Boring frankly. I suppose that is the Premier League for you, a manufactured fake glory product only open to the highest bidder. We sell our cup dreams for a slice of the cake at the top table. In fact, we've all sold our souls. When we're back in the Championship we will probably look back fondly at this time. But at the moment it all seems flat and empty.

Agree and no leaders on the pitch which is the crucial bit .Let's see what effort and character is shown tonight after a week of negativity which must have filtered through management and players alike.

I do think social media exacerbates our sense of disappointment and unhappiness. 15 years ago, and before, you only had your mates to drown your sorrows with.

Now we have thousands of fellow supporters with whom we can, together, whip up an ever escalating sense of disenchantment and annoyance on a daily basis.

Hard to disagree with you pax. There's a lot of unwarranted negativity on here. But, it's not just on this site, the trend is universal in the social media world.

I don't get to live matches now, but I well remember the fun of banter on the terraces, when the opportunity for an exchange of views took place. Face to face stuff, criticism included, tends to be more good natured than through the ether.

Anyway, us old'ns are more pragmatic. Been there, done that as they say. However, Premiership football is tough and demanding, but on balance I'd sooner get my fun from seeing our team compete with the top teams in the country, even if we might win more games in the Championship.

Keep smiling!

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

Resonates with me. Perhaps age is a factor as well. As a young man back in the 70s and 80s when I lived in South London, I would turn up on the terraces with a bunch of mates, not expecting great things but enjoying those rare occasions when we put one over a bigger team (our first ever league win over Arsenal comes to mind). Like today, most seasons we lost more games than we won; some of our football was woeful, and yet we still went week-in, week-out.

Today, the money seems to be everything. We aren't on a level playing field; we can't realistically compete with the big boys and even if we produce a string of great players from our new Academy, the lure of megadosh and European football on offer from the big clubs will lure many of them away. What's left? Only the dream of a cup run (like 2015/16) and the desire for a pleasant football style, neither of which seem likely at present.

And yet, once fans are allowed back, I'll make the 7 hour return trip to Selhurst in (misguided) hope that things will improve.

Go on say it: "You must be mad, Doombear!"

It has always been my experience that the only time the fans are really happy is when the team wins regularly . That applies whichever division we have been in.
From 3 South, to Premier, that has always been the case. A winning team in the Forth division, averaged 20,000 a game , with highs of 40,000 plus. When people voted with their feet. Very few moans were heard through all of our high win seasons through all the divisions. Only when it was constant hard work did the moans come.
It was no different when Bert Head , kept us in the old division One for a few years of struggle. The moaning was non stop. Yet a winning side under Noades, it didn’t matter about quality.
Not winning often enough in the Top division has led to major problems for a multitude of clubs with the fans.
