I bought myself a Dansette record player, but didn't have any records. So I went out and bought "Crying in the Rain" by the Everly Brothers and "Shadows to the Fore" EP which had Apache and FBI plus two other tunes on it. Wore both records out .

I suppose buying a record player before you have any records is today's equivalent of buying petrol before you buy a car.

I was due to get a record player for Christmas. Prior to that I listened to my parents records that pretty much consisted of a few Beatles, Beach Boys and Johnny Cash albums.

It was 1969 when skinheads were fashionable. I wasn't a skinhead but used to like reggae music and bought a number of 45s that were released on the Trojan label. Not sure if it was actually my first purchase but one of my favourites at the time was Liquidator by the Harry J All Stars. My taste in music must have changed rapidly because I remember my first LP purchase was Bridge over Troubled Water. I bought it with my Birthday money in March 1970!

Every week in the mid to late 70’s, I used to get my pocket money and off down to ‘Our Price records’ or WHSmiths in Bromley to buy two or three singles that were on top of the pops the night before!!
