I have just opened the same topic on the Nostalgia forum.

As I was watching I was marvelling at how many of our players were home grown. I then thought again and realised that every player, bar Burridge in goal, had come through the junior ranks.

Just about to post the same comment until I saw yours. Decent football too and Burridge too better than I remember him which is not to put him down at all.

Enjoying getting up later and not having someone who knows better than me (apart from the missus of course).

That was a great watch, was there at the time as a 14 year old (season ticket for for U16 in the new stand enclosure was £16 !).
Was amazed at the interview after with Brian Moore talking to Big Mal and El Tel. You wouldn't get anything like that now, could you imagine!
Good Times.

Just watched it!! Awww the memories the first year I had a season ticket, me and my mate had seats in the new stand which were bought in error by our parents, so we spent all season jumping down into the enclosure to stand with our mates

and the chat after the game - 'the Liverpool of the south', 'we should finish top four' - five years later we were losing at home 5-0 to Wimbledon with their fans singing 'team of the eighties'. With the right stewardship we might have proved all the sleeping giant talk wasn't just talk - I fear the club's ambition has shrunk since then - I hope to see 35,000 crowds back at Selhurst, don't think I'll ever see 40,000 + again but we used to get those crowds regularly for big games and derbies back then, even when we were in the second and third divisions (40k at home to Spurs '77 43k at home to Liverpool the same year). Stonewall pen btw.

I guess ticket prices were a lot lower then comparatively. Such a shame, seemed we were going to go on to be South London’s super club

Back then we had the best youth policy in the country bar no one.

At one point it seemed half the England under 21 team was Palace.

Winning the FA youth cup two years on the trot proves your point

I wasn't into CPFC then and have never seen much of Vince Hilaire.

What I found most impressive from him was the ability to cross with accuracy with both feet from all sorts of angles.

What about Walsh up front? He doesn't get mentioned much and did score in this match and the 2-0 over Burnley that clinched promotion a few months earlier.

Hero or Zero?

Walsh in my opinion was average ish striker in a good team.

Vince was a hero for many fans (including a young Tom the Eagle) The Zaha of his day. Often poor end product though but very exciting. Brilliant team, best defence we have ever. Kenny would have made any team in the world.

I’ve got Barry Silkman on Facebook and he posted up about this game. He said Big Mal went missing after the game and re-appeared the following Friday. He stayed in London all week apparently. Silky tried to stick up for him and ended up getting booted out for it
