Three things. First, and I know it’s a thorny subject for some of you, but I think Roy has served the club well during his tenure here. Sure, we’ve seen some dour football and, secretly, I confess I’ve even been known to change channels occasionally during our games. Secondly, I’m assuming we’ll finish the season with a flourish and comfortably stay up for another, record breaking (for us anyway) term. Thirdly, and this is the part that’s not clear yet, for the sake of this thread anyhow, most of us seem to think Roy will either retire or be asked to resign and be replaced by a new, as yet unknown, manager. Now it occurred to me this morning, what would it be like for Roy to depart without the fans being able to say ‘Thank you and Good Luck’ According to the latest Government guidelines fans won’t be allowed back into stadiums until May 19th at the earliest, and then only in limited numbers. Our last home fixture with Arsenal is on the 12th and we’re up at Anfield for our last game on the 23rd. Poor chap, I thought. One of the best manager’s we’ve had, a schoolboy supporter who has Palace in his veins and he leaves without so much as a shout from the Holmesdale end. Imagine the atmosphere at Selhurst with a full house. There’d be a bloody great banner draped all over the Homesdale, Roy would be led out to the centre circle by Mr Parish who would make a presentation and a short(hopefully) speech and then for Roy to acknowledge the adulation of his adoring fans. Then we’d go on to beat Arsenal 3-0 to round off the season. But, as things stand, none of that will happen. Then I thought, maybe that’s Mr Parish’s cunning plan. He won’t let Roy go with a whimper, because he’s a decent sort of bloke, and he has said publicly that he thinks every club should have at least one game at home before the season ends. Maybe he wants to keep Roy on for another year. So, what do we think lads? Should Roy at least be given the opportunity to wave us goodbye and be thanked by the fans for his valuable contribution? Or should he just quietly dissolve into a memory to be remembered only when the new guy makes a complete Horlicks of things and we dive into the Championship?
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |

If he does leave this summer I agree fully with you it would be a real dis-service to Roy if he does not get the send off he deserves. I would like to think that next season he could make a half time appearance so could be acknowledged by the fans. Sadly I doubt this would happen as it could be seen to undermine the new manager or at least make it awkward for them. I really would love to believe that although I acknowledge there are very mixed views regarding Roy's tenure that fans would recognise in general he has done well and always acted in good faith towards the club and give him the applause his dignity deserves.

Best thing would be for Roy to move upstairs so if it goes belly up with the new man he could take over again.

He'll never move 'Upstairs'. Firstly there's no vacant role for him, and secondly he is a training ground coach. His choices will be either retire or see if he can get another job. I was thinking this morning that if we finish safely as usual, and if Roy doesn't stay on, it will indeed be a shame not to see him off. On the other hand, if he were led out to the centre circle in front of a full house, I'm not sure he'd quite get an emotional tear-jerking send off either. I think he's respected more than loved. It should be possible to send messages to Roy through the club perhaps, for those of us who wanted to say an appropriate 'Thank You and Good Luck', which I might well do if he does move on.

I'm sure you're right btp, Just seems a shame if he goes without so much as a wave to the crowd. I suspect you're also on the mark about some fans reaction too. If Selhurst had been heaving for various games this season (and the end of last) he may well have been subjected to a chorus of discontent from the gallery. Still think he's done us proud. South London an' all that.

Being born and brought up in West Croydon after the war is not perhaps the most generous or promising start life can offer you, and when you add in that his dream of being a footballer didn't get out of first gear, there really wasn't much handed to him on a plate. He made the long, hard journey to the top of coaching, learned to speak six languages, worked (with great success often) all around the world, is still working (and doing well) at his age, and though not without fault, generally appears to me to be an articulate, honest and polite gentleman.

Absolutely, and I will add a gentleman of unimpeachable integrity with decency oozing from every pore.

If it was his decision not to stay on then I think a send off might be appreciated, but if it's the club's decision I get the feeling he's the sort of man who would hate it, seeing it as somewhat condescending. He has also made it clear that he is not one for sentimentality, so maybe in fact he would rather leave quietly with a handshake if he does leave. I would also say that some of his post-match comments have been a bit barbed of late so I'm not sure all is well behind the scenes, although that could also be to do with external pressures from the fans and the media.
