I been in the main stand terracing. Mains stand seating. Directors box. Alan Stephenson area. WhiteHorse terraces seats and boxes. I even been for a walk all round the ground v St Mirren in a friendly back in the seventies. Magic. Turnstiles in the Homesdale and Arthur but now season in the Arthur. But cup matches back by the Ultras. Marvellous.

We were getting regular crowds of 14 to 16K back in the Championship. That was about a decade ago and I thought our current ST sales were around 16K? I think we'd currently struggle to fill a 40K stadium but with some incentives for locals and attractive PL opposition to lure "football tourists" we'd fill a 30K.

In my little north wales town we have about a dozen eagles (granted they include son, daughter nephew and his lad)brainwashed by myself a supporter since Bert Head who watch most away matches in North West and Midlands (no guessing who pays)and local taxi driver Gerry Humphreys played for palace in early seventies. Also about an hour inland in slate mining/edge of Snowdonia a small village called Penmachno the palace are most supported club.Apparently in 1960/70 a couple of lads in village had trials and played forCPFC.I wonder how many other areas around Britain have pockets of palace fans for these reasons

How many total Crystal Palace fans do you think there are in the UK?

And if Palace had a 65,000 seater stadium do you think they would sell out every game?

Here is the population of some boroughs

Croydon Population - under 400,000
Sutton Population - just over 200,000
Bromley Population - about 330,000[/

Would we sell out 65,000 every week?! We don’t even sell out 26,000 every week. There’s often tickets available on match days for the likes of Burnley

I think our International appeal, and apparently it's huge, has a lot to do with the club's name. Crystal Palace has a kind of glamorous ring to it that say Leeds, doesn't have to folk on the other side of the world. The name attracts attention.

There's a Crystal Palace hotel in Tombstone Arizona. Not a lot of people know that.

I remember seeing that in a western film once, may have been tombstone actually. I’ve just had a read up on it on google. Strangely that’s not the only coincidence ie the name. It was also part of the Golden Eagle brewery, and it burned down in 1882! The curse of the real Crystal Palace? Interesting read.

By the way, to answer the poster questioning the Arthur. I’ve bee literally everywhere in Selhurst right back to when the Arthur was all terracing. The Arthur is the worst stand. It’s dark in there cramped. Crap food and never have what you want, but it is real old school with real old school singing fans. We easily out sing the Ultras when we get going. I’d be happy to go back but only if they let us fill it. Which ain’t gonna happen. I’m very lucky to have been all round. Loved the Homesdale when it was terracing. That’s where I went then

Used to be able to move all round the ground, other than the stand.
Change ends at half time, run on the pitch , half time .Full time.
Walk off with the players. Don’t remember the players minding to much. Unreal. So very different now.

In terms of moving around the ground I recall supporters moving at half-time to behind the goal we were going to be attacking in the second half.
In those days, before the game teams used to enter the pitch separately - Big cheer for our team and boos for the opposition!
Furthermore none of this perfunctory 'Hand shake' ritual before kick off.

Yep, well done, it did feature in Tombstone and probably any other movie about the gunfight at the OK Corral. Didn’t know the original burnt down - they've obviously rebuilt it. I've been there and got the shot glass to prove it. Very touristy though.

On the subject of Selhurst, I agree there is an old style magic about the ground. Football is essentially a working class game traditionally followed by working class blokes who were happy to stand to watch a game of football not have a cup of tea and a prawn sandwich.

A game lasts 90 minutes so say you're in the ground for 2 hours you're not going to die of thirst or starvation. I don't get this modern need to eat and drink all the time. And don't get me started about people who rustle, crunch and slurp their way through a film or show.

Anyway, although I can't go anymore, I'd hate to think Selhurst would be replaced by a sterile ground for the benefit of corporate hospitality.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

You’ll probably find that most have lived nearby to the ground at some point even if they have now moved away. We are primarily that sort of club.

I think you are right. I now live in Sussex just north of the Downs, but grew up in West Wickham. I know of other Palace fans living nearby but they all grew up in and around the Croydon area.

Probably a couple of years ago, I attended a match at Hassocks FC and got talking to a charming chap who was a supporter of our club.

Maybe we should form a hard right Sussex Palace Old Gits Supporters Splinter Group. Or will we just argue about North vs South?

I need the nurse to bring my strong coffee ASAP. I did of course mean West vs East!
