If our style of play suits a Benteke type player then it kind of begs the question why we have wasted a load of money on two loans in Batshuyai and Mateta, neither of which play in that style.

Perhaps it’s because our midfield supports the defence better than it does our forward play. Hopefully that will be addressed this summer with the purchase of midfielders that supply Mateta and Zaha (if still at Palace) better than luka and Reidewald are doing? Plus a new manager may help this? At this time, Benteke is our best forward / defensive forward we have that complements the way Hodgson sets us up. It also hasn’t helped that we have not had a settled back four for which in my opinion Sakho and Tompkins are our best football playing defenders unlike the others who are better at hoffing it out?

If you guys were in Mateta's shoes... would his current place warming the bench and maybe getting 5-10 mins a game be a positive influence on him wanting to be at Palace. Benteke is not prolific in front of goal and the chances he gets are usually wasted.

As others have said, you need a forward to be a threat infront of goal.

Why bother getting any attacking players in if Roy doesn't play them or try anything different?

Why would any forward thinking player want to come to Palace as it is?

This all feels like Groundhog day tbh. just swapo mateta for Eze.

he played a small amount - then was Left on the bench for a while whilst people were castigating Rh "Why buy him when we don't play him". He's now a regular first teamer.

It takes time for a player to be integrated into the first team, and players take differing amount of times to do so. We've only had Mateta for 6 weeks or so. a bit of patience is required.

I have heard someone highlighting a pattern emerging :

Sorloth signed - Made no impact.
Meyer signed - Never worked out for him.
Camarasa signed - Only made a single appearance,
Batshuayi signed - Has made no impact in his second spell.
Mateta signed - Benteke preferred to him.

It was also opined that had Schlupp been fit he would have played instead of Eze.

Mateta scored on his first start. Benteke's been missing open goals for fun for three seasons. I lost all faith with him watching him murder two tap ins against Liverpool. Wilf lost the rag too - right in front of me. We would have won with anyone else up front. 5 goals, OK, but what about the previous 40 games? It's unforgiveable.

Firstly, Mateta didn't score on his first start. He started in the woeful team performance against Leeds where his lack of PL experience and nous saw him lose a ball played to him by a defender and Leeds promptly scored their first goal.

As for Benteke, I was talking about this season, not his previous pathetic efforts. There is no justification for his woeful performances in the previous 3 seasons.

As for the Liverpool game to which you refer, it clearly wasn't this season as Benteke was banned for the game due to his dismissal at West Ham, so again, not relevant to his performance this season. Having said all that, I was very much hoping we would have got rid of him in January for a few million, but alas, that didn't happen.

As for the future, who knows. Strikers are expensive, so I could see Tekkers getting an extension if he carries on putting in reasonable performances with say 3 or 4 goals in the remaining 9 games.

While I don't take issue with your list it would ice the cake if you added an opinion

I can see Roy doing another season. Benteke staying and a similar approach and style next season. Sorry, just think that is where this is going

All of our other players have gifted goals. OK, Mateta scored on his second start. What's the point? Already Sorloth according to some. If you don't want to acknowledge the way we are using players and all is fine in Roy World, then fair enough. The defences are getting more and more ridiculous. I can't wait for the careful what you wish for.
Most of our issues are actually Tactical but that is just being brushed under the carpet due to a couple of lucky wins. Lucky I've got my lucky charms - although I'm not expecting much from the rest of the season.
I wonder if Mateta is already regretting coming. Or if Eze is, it would not be a major surprise. Everyone wants to pick stuff apart to prove their point. Bottom line is we are rubbish, but it's not our manager's fault apparently.

Funny how Benteke's performances have picked up now there's a bit of competition and a new contract to secure.

Personally I'm saying nothing of the sort, and I can't see that anyone else is either. What I have seen and what seems a fair point, is that Mateta may need time to adjust to this team and league. He looked a fish out of water at Leeds, and though he scored at Brighton (brilliantly so) so did Benteke. Mateta found it very hard to give us a way out in that game, whilst Benteke at least does hold the ball up fairly often.

Ideally we would play in such a way that either Benteke gets 15+ league goals a year, or Mateta does, but for either to happen we have to be able to get into the opponent's half. That's a really important part of a forwards job, and at the moment Mateta doesn't seem to help us do that.

He's not a lost cause, but it's not unreasonable of the manager (who works with him every day) to look at what he's got and decide that using Benteke for the rest of this season is the better bet.

Your post seems reasonable. I've plenty to counter but at least you're respectful in your posting and I'm tired of the same arguments. I've said my pieces and could easily argue forever. There's little point, we will still all be Palace at the end of the day. Whatever way we play, or whoever the manager is.
Surprising Roy is this divisive really. He's not that contentious a figure. That's worth considering, I don't remember particularly differing opinions over other managers. I suspect an age thing is part of it.

I quite agree that we are rubbish and the style of play we have is clearly down to the manager. I'm neither particularly pro Hodgson nor anti him. All I was doing was correcting the post of someone (i.e you), whose (IMO) bias sometimes gets the best of him. You are not alone by any means. Such bias exists in both the Roy-IN and Roy-OUT camps, and I probably have my own biases that surface from time to time.
