Matov.
We are a small country with nothing like the space of others.
The big cities have just been superspreaders sadly.
Add to that huge swathes of people who have consistently ignored the rules and us not closing our borders and there you have it.
Also - different argument - how many actually died from Covid.
I know a few who have and a couple who most definitely didn't.
We may never know of course but we had a perfect storm and whilst our leaders deserve some criticism people need to look at themselves as well.our
I pretty much agree with you

IMO the biggest mistake the Government made was not shutting the borders. The country was in lockdown and we still had flights from China arriving ( not repatriation ones). Admittedly flights have decreased the borders have always remained open

Problem is that given how the airline industry operates, along with the wider requirements of all kinds of elements of how international trade and relations functions, closing down of borders is a bloody huge step that has potentially massive ramification especially for a nation like the UK and the role especially Heathrow plays in how air travel pans out.

And most Covid came into the UK via Italy, Spain and France (or least that is how I understand it) in March (I caught it myself working at Gatwick during this period of time).

Smaller countries like New Zealand can isolate themselves. It is never an option for the UK. And if it ever does happen then we are well into potentially complete collapse territory.

The more effective tactic is far strictly enforced local lock-downs. And I mean total. But I suspect we simply lack the political will, and for many of the right reasons, for that to ever happen.

Oddly enough I suspect that is one area where the Left would potentially be far more willing to take decisive action. Far more in line with their political instincts than for those of us on the Right.

A Corbyn led government might have proved, in some circumstances, more willing to countenance far more stricter lock-down measures than a Conservative one. That idea of wielding top-down control sits far more easily with the Left than the Right.

Are Labour deliberating looking to destroy themselves? On Politics Live today on BBC2, the Labour MP Nadia Whittome refused to condemn the violence in Bristol last night.

Now I would assume that she was put forward by the Labour Party to represent them and the events last night would have definitely been discussed.

Are they really that stupid?

If she is still a Labour MP by this time tomorrow, Labour are truly f***ed. LOL.

Perhaps....and I'm just chewing the cud here, they want to emulate what the Democrats and Antifa/Blm did in America with Antifa/Blm here.

That would sure be interesting.

No. To win in England, Labour need to become more socially conservative, not less. That is the dilemma for them. Now they have lost the blind tribal loyalty in many northern seats, they need to actually win them back. Starmer has condemned the violence. The issue is why the hell this woman was allowed anywhere near a programme like this. Just bad, bad, bad press management.

Stupid Left-Wing MP's are not a new phenomena. But you don't let me within a million miles of programmes like this. Her appearance would have had to go through Labours Press office.

Its pretty basic stuff. If Police vans and stations are attacked by rioters, you condemn then if you are serious in any way about forming a new Government.

They have to withdraw the Whip from her. Today. Failure to do so means this just festers.

I can't see the Labour party becoming more socially conservative.....Hell, even the conservatives aren't socially conservative.

Still, I think not attacking Police vans hasn't that much to do with social conservatism.....it's just about not being a criminal.

You are of course correct about how Labour should take action (though I think a suspension personally - as this woman won an election). But really it's for the Labour party and there's a free speech issue as well.

I was just chewing the cud on Labour copying the Democrats on a 'wink wink' approach of using Antifa/Blm. I'm quite open to being wrong about it and maybe I am....call me a cynic I suppose.

IMO the only chance Labour have of winning an election is to totally change tack and come up with some fresh political ideas that appeal to both the centre left and right. I believe the British public will be ripe for a change of party but only in the right circumstances.

Stick with mainstream labour policies and supporting candidates like the woman described above and I doubt they will ever see power again.

There are two things that could be done immediately as it is obvious, even the police admit, this is going to get much worse.

1. The police should be returned to their pre-covid duties.

2. The proposed bill should be ditched.

What's your thoughts on the policing bill out of interest? Seems to be a pretty worrying clampdown on free speech in parts.
