Staying up for a ninth year is not mediocrity, its a fine achievement which the club has waited over a century for, obtained through a little luck but a lot more hard work, realism and professional expertise. Leaving aside any reservations about the style of play, the long term results are plainly excellent.

To those asking for more 'ambition', I can only refer you once again to the irrefutable correlation between budget and league position. We are, as a plain matter of fact, comfortably outside the top ten economically. If you have a method for bridging that gap then congratulations, you are a genius, and probably going to be very rich, because nobody else has been able to crack that little riddle.

To those who persist with the argument that after six/seven/eight seasons we should be looking to 'kick on to the next level', I can only suggest a closer look at how the finances actually work. We could stay in the league for twenty years but if we are the fourteenth or fifteenth richest club for each of those twenty years then our length of stay is irrelevant.

This is a fine achievement. The fact that it is frequently awful to watch is another matter altogether.

Quite right.

100%. Unless we see huge investment, it is the best we can hope for. If you are the 17th biggest spenders, where are you likely to finish???

You Sir absolutely get it and are a proper Crystal Palace fan.

How many teams have been relegated from 38 points ?

Well done Roy and the boys !!

While am sure your correct on this occasion, I recall we've been relegated on 45 points I think in 95 and 49 points in 93! That one in 04 hurt the most on 33 points last day at Charlton coz I'd flown home from Barca for it

Absolutely spot on!

I totally agree with you and the sentiment of the originator of the post. We have a decent squad many committed players and if you were to compare our finances to others in the EPL I doubt if we would be above 16th! Also I see Garth Crooks has put Kayoute in his team of the week not only saying he was brilliant last night but has been for a long time - that will upset some delusional Palace fans!!
Finally I love your Blackadder quote!

Only Manchester United, Arsenal, Tottenham, Liverpool, Everton and Chelsea....have never been relegated.

Aston Villa were, up until recently, part of that august clique.

Before Ancelloti, Everton were looking like candidates for the drop.

Many teams have won the title and been relegated...either before or after....Man City, Leicester, Blackburn Rovers,

Some small clubs have had a fantastic run in the Prem, surprised everybody and been up near the top 4 in the table, for a little while...Hull, Blackpool, Watford, QPR, Stoke ....and then back to the shyte.

Every team is standing on a trap-door.

When we finish fourth from bottom, that is an amazing achievement. And i have a bottle of champagne ready for the day Arsenal go down.

Call me old fashioned, but i believe in the 'big stadium full of fans' school of being a big or small club. Money from season tickets. And by that reckoning, even Charlton have a thousand more seats than us. And where have that club been recently ?

This is the truth. What needs to be understood is that "kicking on to the next level" is likely to actually result in that level being the Championship.

So what is best for our long term future? Staying in the PL and having to accept both modest ambition and mediocre football but slowly building the stability and finances to enable the eventual ground redevelopment? Or going down, playing exciting football with a youthful side of academy graduates hoping we can sell a few for mega money but then come back up?

The good thing is that we are preparing for both possibilities and for that Steve deserves great credit. The club is being run very well.

The fans of Stoke were bored with the Pulis way of playing. They wanted expansive exciting football. Akin to watching Barcelona.

So they got rid of Pulis. Be careful what you wish for....

Every year we have this.

I don't think any team should take their foot off the gas until they cannot be relegated.
Fulham still have 21 points to play and the other teams below us 24. Fulham are 12 points behind.

Does this need explaining further?

We are highly unlikely to be relegated, but I don't want to get anywhere near it. With our coming fixtures, we won't get too many more points I suspect.

Being relegated could set the club back a decade.

Remaining in the Premier League must be the only aim, and we must play to our strengths to facilitate that.

Until we have a Roman Abramovich bank rolling the club, this is probably the best it will get.
