"Waah! You called him scum on page 1 of this thread!"

Pick one.

That is my point. Whether or not he’s ‘scum’ does not need to come into consideration when considering whether Chauvin was guilty or not. Most people on this thread seem to be forgiving the crime because they have made a character judgement on the victim.

This was a straight forward murder trial where the assailant, a cop, committed the crime on camera.

He took another man's life and was as guilty as hell.

No jury could find any different, the video evidence cannot be wished away.

Daft conspiracy theories, democrats and republicans, are not relevant.

What happened, actually happened.

It's not at all straightforward. The verdict may look like that because it's a white wash. However, straight forward murder is where someone knowingly goes to kill someone else and carries it out. A policeman restraining a suspect inappropriately causing death is hardly straightforward. There will be appeals as the law has not been followed correctly, and I suspect everyone with half a brain can see that.

George Floyd’s background is irrelevant. It is not the policeman’s job or right to use lethal force and to decide if someone lives or dies, no matter they are accused of doing. This judgement reflects that.

It is relevant when you called people out for calling him scum, he was a scumbag. Doesn’t excuse the actions of Chauvin though

I thought manslaughter would be the verdict ( and probably should have been). Could someone explain how you can be convicted for 2nd and 3rd degree murder plus manslaughter for the death of one person? Serious question

This explains it after a fashion.

If the law was followed correctly, this was clearly manslaughter. But obviously it's mob justice now. They should just change the constitution to 'Every Citizen will be entitled to a fair trial unless loads of people will protest and burn stuff and kill people themselves if they don't get what they want'.

Whilst I have many issues with the law in this country it certainly isn't as bizarre as American law.

It's completely relevant as even the biggest scumbag gets a fair trial.

Many people's faith in the system may have been tested by all the nonsense they heard in media posted for political gain.

Now they can be content the system works.

The issue now for the prosecution is that calls to riot is then jury does not come to a decision in line with the violent minority may be used as an reason to argue prejudice in the decision making process.

If anything violent protesters have prolonged the legal process unnecessary, causing more pain to the Floyd family.

Having looked at it, the charges of manslaughter and murder in the second degree seem to be nailed on. Murder in the 3rd degree seems to be a little less robust.

I call it a Blackwash, what is the president of the united states doing calling the Floyd family before the verdict, calling for murder charge, is this not perverting the course of justice, I would call for a retrial and get 12 independent jurors in from Russia to try the case..

The political interference, in this case, is shocking. And whilst I can be justified in being called out for 'whataboutery', I do wonder if Biden has put a call into the parents of the 7 year old African-American girl who was shot to death in Chicago at the weekend? I suspect not.

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but instead of the endless recriminations between all sides, and if a "legacy" is truly desired from what happened, isn't this a perfect opportunity to have a massive recruitment drive for more black police officers, both in the States and here?

Don't like the current policing? Then police your own communities with "your own".

Make law enforcement a valued job in the community. Be flexible with the base requirements to become a police officer if need be and make it financially rewarding. Any shootings subsequently wouldn't be racially motivated in this case, it would just be a wrong'un police officer or a wrong'un criminal.

Make being a police officer aspirational for the youth of the community.

Unless of course there is no genuine desire to maintain the law and live in a community that is not run by criminals.

A genuine opportunity to reboot, but I'm under no illusions that it has as much chance of happening as Palace being invited into the next Big 6 breakaway.

Living down here does have some advantages. At least you can see them cry.

There is nothing currently stopping black people from joining the force, in fact, I believe it has been actively encouraged for many years.
