You must have a very short memory.

Falling from the old first division to the third division.
Alan Mullery period.
Francis, Taylor and Burley years, good players boring managers.
There are many more poor season fighting relegation.

Being safe in mid table and a saturation of televised football is taking away the enthusiasm of watching a game.

Painter, you forgot Dario Gradi.

Although that was a case of bad players, bad manager.

He did like trying out youngsters , saying that

I didn’t even find myself getting that excited when we scored last night. My instant reaction was ‘wait for the VAR referral’, which sure enough there was one, so you can’t even get excited by a goal now as you’re just waiting for it to be ruled out for something or other. By the time it was awarded, the whole excitement and euphoria of us scoring had passed me by, ruined by this s***, false layer of forensic scrutiny, checking every minute detail, whenever a goal is scored

Bollox to VAR. Bring back goals like the 2nd one in this vid at approx 1 min 50 secs. [Link]

I celebrate when goals go in and then celebrate again when the VAR check is over. If it's ruled out, then its been ruled out for good reason (most of the time) and I have no problem with it.

As for ruling goals out that are slightly offside, offside is offside - a foul leading to a goal is still a foul. VAR is doing its job and doing it well (statistics back this up), its the officials behind VAR that are poor.

I can't watch games because there are no crowds. Champions League I've missed the lot. Once crowds are back, I'll start watching more often.

It will be better next season when hopefully we can start attending matches again.
Its not just being at the game which is something to look forward to but the pre match drinks, meeting your mates and after, if Palace win and play well sets the rest of the weekend.
I have found this season hard work also and interest petered out unfortunantely.

I’m with you here. It’s good to be in the PL because I was rather hoping that the money would be used to upgrade the ground and improve the spectator experience. I get the academy and appreciate that but the ground seems to stall.
However on the pitch it is simply soul destroying. Last night, as soon as Leicester scored, I turned the TV over and said to my missus that there’s no point watching any more as we’ll lose 2-1 or 3-1 as he simply won’t look to make any subs in an attempt to win the game. It’s just so utterly boring and frustrating in equal measure.
I’ve spent years coaching and managing teams (albeit at a low level) and absolutely love my football - but I’ve never felt this apathetic about Palace before in over 40 years. I was excited about Eze, always excited about Wilf and there are some superb and exciting youngsters but that excitement has literally been bored out of me. It’s just so excruciatingly dull.

Could you imagine if he did that today?

In order of annoyance:

1. Disallowed goal
2. Red Card
3. Banned for probably 10 games
4. Whining Man U supporters

Really interesting thread.
Summarising the comments, there is widespread disenchantment, and it's due to a number of factors: VAR;
lack of crowds;
saturation TV coverage of every match;
modern possession football;
Roy's dour style squeezing the passion out of Palace's play;
unending virtue-signalling (all that sanctimonious bilge about taking the knee on Sky before last night's game was sickening);
money-men monkeying with the traditions of the game (most of them from charming places like China, Russia and the Middle East).
The crowds will return. But the other factors indicate a growing sickness in the way the game is going.
A lot of people, it seems, are feeling increasingly disillusioned, and I don't see it changing.
