I didn’t think the performance on Monday was negative or boring.

I don't think it was negative or boring either. What is frustrating is the number of warning signs we didn't heed before they got their second.

Why not bring McCarthy on at that point to freshen the midfield and put pressure on the ball?

Why not bring on Schlupp at that point into the middle to retain possession better and relieve some pressure?

Why not bring Kelly on and go to a back 5 to reduce the amount of space Dann has to cover (Leicester said they deliberately targeted that space CB to FB)?

I totally recognise the squad isn't in good shape - our defensive options are a shambles. My disappointment comes from the management's seeming stubbornness to do anything to positively impact the game before we go behind - the need for which is all the greater when the players aren't up to scratch for a full 90.

Three years from now this thread should be reposted so all the moaners can see how spoilt they were to be complaining about supporting a team that was safely established in the top division with an excellent manager and some terrific players. This is as good as it gets, folks. We don’t have the money to go much higher but there is a lot of scope for it to get far worse. Enjoy it while you can. I am.

if football was only about looking at a League table or Wikipedia data on consecutive seasons in the Prem you'd have a point. But it's not. It's supposed to be about sporting endeavour, entertainment, escapism to an extent and many other things that go way beyond what you've said above. Being bored to death by negative tactics and a wholly unambitious approach is not as good as it gets in football and most fans know that because they've experienced it.

Our goal against Leicester was a rare moment of joy and a show of what attacking ruthlessness our team is capable of. Sadly we don't see enough of that these days.

Agree, Hodgson usually tends to leave his changes until it's too late.

Surrounded by Weed fans down here I often get their views on their season, our season, the Premier League.

When I talk about how boring our football is they talk about life under Chris Hughton. Yes he kept them up. He sorted out the defence and then it fell apart but it was still the same, boring football.

They brought in Potter - their league position hasn't changed much - BUT they are enjoying the football a lot more.

That's my view on our season. Roy is to be applauded for what he does - virtually guaranteeing premier league football - but the days of that 5-0 win over Leicester are long gone.
When the matchday line-up was announced my heart sank again. The brief flirtation with youth on the bench had gone and it was the same stale line-up with nothing to get excited about.

I get frustrated with people saying "careful what you wish for" "look at Charlton" - as though people who want a bit more entertainment are looking for a top 7 finish - that's not it.
It's crazy to think that Roy is the only manager in Europe who can keep us up - and no I'm not going to give a list of names.

Roy from a few season's back with Loftus-Cheek and Cabaye is different to Roy now. Yes the investment in the squad lately is poor but we're not going down and he's still not trying anything different.

Who has had the most fun this season? Us, Weed, Southampton? Only Sheffield United look less entertaining.

No way will I EVER look back on the last 2 seasons as some sort of Golden Age - even if we're in League 2 playing away at Accrington Stanley.

You fed me, you bred me, I'll remember your name.

The problem is that we don't have either Loftus-Cheek or Cabaye type player and our defence/DMs are 3 years older and slower. Hodgson will always be cautious BUT if the club were to give him the right resources he has shown he can be more attack-minded. Having said that, I suspect his tenure will end in the summer

Exactly this.

Posters always say 'I know our squad needs investment, we haven't got the players but...' then go on to blame Roy anyway. It's either one or the other for me and the squad is not good enough to play attractive football so until then, we have to stick to what we're good at - Sit back and hit on the break when we can.

8 years in the PL means nothing, look at Everton - They've been here since Day 1 and they're only now (after huge investment) battling for europe and the Europa League will be all they achieve for all their millions spent but we should expect attractive football, pushing for more than midtable?

It's not one or the other. Yes, the squad isn't great but it could be used better. For a start, anyone who won't renew their contract - why play them? Why not give their replacements time now to get used to the first team? Why are our team so unfit? Why are we rubbish at set pieces? Why do we seem to have a plan A and nothing else? Why does Benteke start every game? Why drop deep so much? Why not interchange the wide players? Why not cross, particularly if we are always using Benteke? Why the aversion to either Tactical or fresh legs substitutions?
Feel free to add your own. These are all issues with the manager. When I list them out, I realise how bad it is. We've stayed up again, basically what next? That's the big one. More of the same won't cut it.

They won't justify Roy's tactics or subs because there is no way of justifying it.

Even when Pardew was going gun-ho I could see he realised we wouldn't keep a clean sheet so his tactics were to try and outscored the opposition. Hodgson just things trying the same thing again will work.... one of his tactics does work well. His PR skills. He'll come out before a game listing all the reasons why the team we are playing are better than us, then afterwards he'll claim we were unlucky and that their goal was a worldie.

Someone baby boomber will just come out and stay something like "you know nothing about football".

If our existing manager is not going to be with us next season, surely this the time to install a new manager for next season so he can assess what he is is inheriting so he can start thinking about the changes that have to be made, especially with so many being out of contract.
Let's start thinking ahead and preparing for the new season and the future of the club, now.
Without some drastic changes, I think we will struggle to stay up next season. The bottom clubs with the exception of SU having been playing some decent stuff.
Newcastle are a case in question. A couple of weeks ago they were in real trouble and they've played some good football and now look where they are!

Not a fan of his subs but tactically he has been spot on. I can assure you without them we’d be going down. When your best centre half is a 35 year old, if you play out from the back you are going to get picked off every single week. We’d be gone a long time ago if it wasn’t for Roy and the ungratefulness shown towards him for his achievements at the club are desperately sad.

We're the Arthur over ere!
