So he has 20 minutes against the best team in the country, when we are already losing 2-0 and he is hopeless! Did you say this after Brighton game? He has hardly had any game time, give the bloke a chance before writing him off

He did absolutely nothing. I thought he was poor against Brighton (goal aside) and Leeds as well and should be doing more to affect the game. Can't hang onto the ball, has a poor touch, movement not great etc.

Obviously I stand to be proven wrong and will eat humble if that's the case.

Absolutely agree with this. Mateta is being treated the way Meyer was treated (and Reidewald until injuries forced Roy to pick him). He is being made marginal.

Meyer wasn't good enough IMO. I'd watched Riedewald with interest in cup games and thought he looked heavy / leggy although he played well against City at home at the end of 2017. He looks lighter now but still not convinced he can play with the intensity to be a regular centre mid starter.

He seems over qualified to play up front for us!

I didn’t see the game today but there must be a reason why he’s not played much. Either they’re working with him on the training pitch to get him ready for next season or he’s not as good as they thought he’d be.

Not the first suggestion that Parish and Freedman think one thing and Hodgson thinks another. The manager must be involved in transfer and loan policy if he picks the team.

I'm not sure that's a given to be honest but Eze aside we've been shopping in the bargain basement haven't we ?

Because Roy says Benteke is a better defender

Soa few long balls up to him, with his back to goal and not one pass to his feet. What is he meant to do? IMO you will be proved wrong about him, as long as he gets sufficient chances

You and I are seeing exactly the same thing then. I'll gladly join you for a slice of that humble pie if he comes good next year (seemingly under different management) but I don't think we need to set the table just yet.

Er ummm ... maybe a silly idea, but why don't we play our forwards up field and give them the football in front of goal?

0-0 is success 38 times a season.
In some managers opinions I guess.

From what I've seen of Mateta so far, I think we were wise to try before we buy. And at the moment I can't see us going through with the full fee.

Aside from a slick finish against Brighton, he looks like a player that's been promoted from the youth team to the first team too soon.

We create so few chances that a striker needs to be able to convert at the Harry Kane level to make an impact on the result. How many chances has Mateta had in the last 3 months? A hell of a lot less than Benteke. Who has started pretty much every game. And how many goals has Benteke scored in that time.

I'm not passing judgement solely on goals. His overall play needs to improve.
