I'm not passing judgement solely on goals. His overall play needs to improve. And he can only improve by being given a chance. Ridiculous writing him off so early imo

Ridiculous writing him off so early imo When the manager's job, reputation and tens of millions of pounds hinge on every point he's not going to get that many chances. He's come up well short so far IMO and after the sh!t that was thrown about for him not being used against Leicester it deserves discussion.

It was always questionable why Mainz let him go when they were themselves in the relegation zone of the bundesliga.

Fair comment but my point was you cannot write a player off when he has so limited chances. Edited by Spiderman (02 May 2021 6.52am)

This is a very fair point, he certainly needs to given every opportunity to get up to speed, which to date he has not, early impressions are not good as he seems to lack pace and vision. In many ways he seems a clone of the current Benteke and sadly that is not a good sign!

No surprises with yesterday’s result, we had a couple of good chances in the first half, but Aguero’s finish was world class you cannot blame the defence for that. We have had a really tough run of games, Chelsea, Leicester and Man City. All 3 of them bang in form not sure what everyone was expecting from these fixtures. We were 10 minutes from getting a point at Leicester mind. Let’s see what the next 3 games bring….

Bear in mind that the manager sees him every day in training, that's how the player earns his opportunities. Like others, I'll be more than happy to be proven wrong.

we've seen this before. A young starlet brought on board to provide "competition", to find out he is only ever going to play second fiddle to a guy who scores an average of 5 goals a season. Is it any wonder his confidence has waned? But lets be fair to RH. After Benteke missed two very good chances to head towards goal, he put Mateta on. Mind you, it was not because of Benteke's performance, which was in RH's opinion good. Instead, two nil down and with the team going nowhere, RH decided to give Mateta a chance to prove himself. Contrast this performance against the one against Brighton. What little opportunity we did have to break forward Mateta ran the channels well and scored a delightful, instinctive goal. Yes, it is true this was followed up by a wonderful Benteke strike and... It's not the first time a couple of goals has been used to justify/rationalize Benteke's continued selection. This is not the first time he has flattered to deceive. If RH stays in charge Mateta's confidence will be shot to pieces, aka Sorloth. Worse still, I fear no up and coming striker would chance coming to Palace. Why would you come, knowing there is zero chance of usurping a 5 goal a season striker?

Enjoy eating Humble Pie next season! Have you learned nothing about Roys time at CP.. when does he set up a team with "forward" thinking. Originally posted by Rachid Rachid Rachid
He did absolutely nothing. I thought he was poor against Brighton (goal aside) and Leeds as well and should be doing more to affect the game. Can't hang onto the ball, has a poor touch, movement not great etc. Obviously I stand to be proven wrong and will eat humble if that's the case.
