I’m thinking, that Hodgson, is stalling . Because it remains to be seen where the club is going. By what he has said, there is no certainty in what the club is going to be doing regards the future. He knows ,we all know, that some will be going, the fact is some need to go, so it’s bad news if they didn’t.
But the big outstanding question for him, is then what? And that applies to any body else who fancies a go at keeping Palace in the Premier league.
If Palace have the means to finance a realistic program to actually progress the club then I reckon Frank, would be a decent choice, able to attract the right type of young players, by purchase, or loan. But if it’s a case of more of the same , filling the holes good enough to scramble to another few seasons in the big time, then it’s only a Hodgson type that might want the job, and he is as good as anybody else if that’s the case. The problem then is, has he had enough of not even getting what he thinks is good enough to survive without the relegation fight that will come if they get this wrong.? Whether he runs things or not. The fact is he has asked for more than he ended with every year so far , it would be no surprise if he wanted more assurances of a definite up grade this year before committing any further.
If Hodgson, hasn’t been offered a contract, and the club continues to have no better outlook concerning the acquisition of a better ,younger squad, then I can only see a has been manager wanting this job, no real risk for their future.
Without some substantial input to the playing staff, it’s possible they will talk to the Lampards of this world , but if he, or they should bite it would put their futures on a type rope.

Would suspect it is more likely to be this.

Most pundits seem to be of the opinion that Parish can't work out weather he should stick with a low risk manager with no aspirations or to seek a better manager elsewhere.

One reason why Hodgson has lasted so long is possibly because Parish doesn't want to be the man that sacks the oldest ever premier league manager. Another is that it costs a lot of money to sack and recruit managers.

It looks like we'll finish the season on 41 points, a terrible season but thankfully Sheffield United, West Brom, and Fulham were worse. A manager on that total will definitely not be stalling for a new contract if he wants a job next season.

With fans back in the ground, we will need a manager who's slightly more aspiration than just being better than the bottom 3.

To be fair, as things stand Brighton, Newcastle and Southampton are worse as well. Could change of course !
And I find some irony that in a results business, Potter is being hailed as the Next Big Thing while Hodgson is treated with such contempt by a percentage of his clubs fans.

We have had this debate before in terms of aspirations, but the pundits have said it, Roy has said it, Parish has said it - first priority is to stay in the League. That's the ' Tone From The Top ' and reflects the approach we see on the pitch.

Not following the why would Dyche leave Burnley for Palace mindset.
We have so much scope to to progress as a club. He is ambitious and cant fail to see the Palace set could be the perfect set up for him.
Give DF your preferred targets and let him get on with it whilst Dyche can focus on the team and oversight of the impressive academy.
Plus the expansion (fingers crossed) of the stadium - loads
more going for us than Burnley - who without Dyche would not be premier league club. Everything is Bargain basement they don’t pay £29 million quid transfer fees and £100k per week + wages. (Not that I agree with that mind you) but we are a step up as a club - on the pitch is a much more even comparison - and that can only be as a result of Dyche being an excellent manager.

I'm not sure I buy this idea that Hodgson isn't fussed to speak to the club until this season is over. He's been perfectly happy to discuss a new contract mid season before.

For me the proof (well, perhaps more a strong indication than actual proof) that the club are looking at alternatives is that they haven't just extended the employment of the man in the dugout.
