Why a lot of us want shot of Roy? It is not because we do not appreciate the job he has done over the past 4 years, and it has nothing to do with his obvious dignity or that he is gent. We keep seeing the pro Roy brigade bringing all of these things up, as if this is these are the most important things. It is the sheer negativity that has driven most of us bonkers. Yesterday proved that this team can play when the shackles are off. We were awesome at times. But we know when next season starts, Roy will revert to type. Our brilliant under 18's will not be gradually filtered into the squad (which we know a Howe or a Lampard would try to do) - Roy simply prefers experienced old pros, but is not just that. The constant selection of favourites, keeping the same eleven, even when it sometimes needs tweaking either because of the opposition or one or two are tired. Then there is his use of substitutes (virtually non-existent) or if he does use them, it is far too late in the game. He even said it is remarkable that the same old pros are still here 4 years later. That is nothing to be proud of, it is total mismanagement which i would blame the board for, but Roy seems happy in the main for it to have happened, and only seems to want to sign journeyman pros. Lastly the myth that he has not been backed. the truth is we overspent massively before he arrived, due to the vanity of Pardew which Parish was happy to go along with, ridiculous fees spent on Sakho and Benteke, and then under Allardyce we were actually the biggest spenders in the January 2017 window, over spending probably on Van Aanholt, Schlupp, and Luka. So when he arrived he had a squad packed with internationals, far better than Pulis ever inherited. The squad just got older over time and now needs a massive overhaul. Unfortunately Roy is not the man to do it. This why Roy has to go, nothing to do with being a gent, being loyal or any of those things. We need a young hungry manager with the drive to want to do this. As was proved yesterday, this team can play and should have been allowed to before. But we just need to get the age of the squad down.

I think this a fair assessment.

Not so long ago I saw an interview with Jimmy Bullard, and one of the things discussed was about him leaving Fulham. He said that when Roy took over, he told him that he wanted to play in a more functional style to suit the team. Bullard said he was used to doing things more spontaneously, and which pushed him towards leaving. Maybe that why we don't see any creative central midfield players - remember what happened to Camarrasa.

I am not looking for the team to pushing for Europe or even a top 10 place, but rather football which is worth watching and gives you some encouragement.

The only thing I would say, is that without players that Allardyce brought in that January (Schlupp, PVA, Luke and on loan Sakho), we would most defiantely got relegated that season.

Don’t forget in your analysis the reason why Roy has played the same players over and over again.

Schlupp has been injured for the majority of the season.
Tomkins has played a handful of games all year.
Cahill has been injured a lot.
Sakho is finished as a player.
McArthur has missed most of the season.
McCarthy has missed a lot of the season.

We have Ward has basically our only fit right back all year. There have been times over the last couple of years when we have no fit striker at the club.

Howe or Lampard wouldn’t know where to start with these problems.

It is very easy to pick one game against Villa and say look what we can do. Have a look back through our starting 11’s and subs bench for the last couple of years and it may change your mind.

No it won't change my mind. Compared to what Pulis inherited, it was by contrast an embarrassment of riches. We also had players like Cabaye and Loftus-Cheek in addition to most of the players we have now who were younger. I'm sorry, but those of us with longer memories cannot remember squads as talented as this with internationals everywhere

I have been “ Pro Roy “ because my perception of the club as a whole clearly differs from the Anti Roy Brigade.

I have posted on many occasions that I agree, the football his teams have produced have rarely excited. But I understand the reasons behind why Hodgson sets his teams up, something that either the Anti Roy folks either don’t get or simply choose to ignore .

If you want to disagree with his team selections, use of subs, tactics - fine. Go on a Chelsea fans website and you will see the same there - fans questioning all of those things. And they are 4th in the league and are in 2 cup finals !

In the 4 years that Roy has been at Palace I would argue that there has been a distinct lack of young talent coming through the ranks. Yes, we now have a very useful collection of players now at U18 level and it’s been widely reported that we are planning to fast track those players deemed good enough - eg Rak-Sakyi- into the first team. And you don’t KNOW that Howe or Lampard would be any more likely to promote younger players - Lampard had no choice when he first became Chelsea manager. Then the transfer embargo got lifted and guess what - major money spent on an influx of expensive players.

It is not a myth that he hasn’t been financially backed it’s a fact ! You even gave the reasons why ! There was no money left after Allardyce went.

Now a squad rebuild of the size required is likely to take longer than the 12 month cycle that Hodgson has been operating in. And if I was Parish, I would be looking for a younger man to do the job. But I still think this Roy situation is more complex than people realise

Good response NEILLO. You just saved me a lot of tapping on my mobile. I agree totally that Roy has done a great job with the poor hand he was dealt. So right about other clubs too - even Liverpool fans find fault with Klopp.

I have posted before that we must trust Mr Parish to make the right decisions about our future. And I stick with that.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

This is where moderators should merge the threads. There is nothing new to say, just coming from a different angle.

Our squad has improved since pulis but it has fallen into relative decline in this division.

I completely agree with the OP. It's time for Roy to go before we all die of boredom.

To the OP....the extravagant spending didn't end with Big Sam. £9 million spent on Sorloth in January 2018.

Palace since 19 August 1972. Palace 1 (Tony Taylor) Liverpool 1 (Emlyn Hughes)
