There’s no doubt that Hodgson is a highly intelligent individual and accomplished coach
Almost an English version of Arsene Wenger.
It is possible his career could have hit greater heights if he had one of those elements that the true elite managers have - boldness.
It could be argued that his conservatism meant that he was always better suited to the likes of WBA , Fulham and ourselves rather than a Man Utd, City or Liverpool.
He produces sound teams rather than sides that will live long in the memory. Unlikely to struggle and unlikely to set the pulse racing.
And that is enough for many.

I'm not sure about Lampard. It can be the case that some managers cope better when they don't have lots of resources and options. It allows for a clearer focus.

At Chelsea Lampard was expected to deliver trophies and a champions league place and was under pressure to learn and perform very quickly.

At Palace he would have some leeway in terms of expectation and perhaps a few less egos to deal with.

A principled man wouldn't have gone to South Africa in the middle of apartheid.

There's been a lot of cult like praise written on here over Hodgson in the last few years. Largely fuelled by the excellent PR work undertaken by Parish. Always remember Parish is a PR guru and can really turn on the mass charm offensive when he needs to. My views are cynical, and in this case direct, but I'd still wager the timing of the announcement on the last Monday before the final home game of the season has been planned for months and month.

The wording of post was in response to months and months of passive abusive comments by one of supporters who's never provided a coherent argument as to why he deserves to retain his highly paid and highly coveted job. Honestly, what did you expect me to do? Roll over and accept defeat like Roy and Dyke following the 2014 world cup draw?

Whilst my post was crass, particular posters deserved that dig. Their reaction to it showed tactical naivety only matched by Roy. If many are wound up that easily, I expect they have never played any sport. Come on guys, think things through. It was like taking candy from a cry-baby. They asked for it.

You've made several assumptions about me, which are wildly inaccurate, and I take that to be more of a reflection on you than me. I'm not shocked, surprised or offended by the responses - it's probably worth considered what a post will achieve before going in all guns blazing.

However, I admire your passion and sticking directly to what you believe in and I think your forthright response was warranted. Seems like many on HoL are more demanding of fellow posters than they are of the management. The poster I was trying to wind up, is a troll who seems to have a fetish for Priti Petal at the moment. He'd never come out that directly. Unfortunately, he'll never learn that if you go round making petty digs at people (but never enough to earn a yellow), they are going to get you back.

As for Roy, he did very well in his two season in charge and then holding the fort until subtle replacements have become available. I hope he enjoys his retirement.

Parish has also done extremely well to show patients and resist calls from the fans to be removed to the detriment of his own popularity. After FdB, Roy was all we could get in. After that season we were always more than likely to stay up (some of the relegated sides where pants). Parish's patients has frustrated whilst he has been willing to let us limp over the finish line, avoiding a payout and showing he's not a trigger happy chairman, and held on until a number of excellent alternative candidates are on the market. He's a cold, calculating man, you can tell how he's become a self made millionaire and excellent chairman.

Fair enough, maybe that was too direct.

He's definitely a survivor. He's manage to find countless ways negotiate the hostile politics of football for 4 decades, which is a huge personal achievement. Whilst other claims are questionable, there's no flawd rhetoric and no need for any PR spin to prove that point. The lengths he's gone to in order to stay in the game have proved it. From one of his harshest critics, I'll gladly give him that accolade. Truly impressive, on a personal level.

Well done Mr Hodgson, you can be very proud of yourself.
