Your Best Memories - What League were we in?

Next season will be tricky to say the least. I started going to Palace in 77/78 with my first full season the glorious 78/79 season ending with that Burnley game that I was lucky enough to get to. Not many memories of note until 88/89 and us beating Blackburn 3-0. The 1990 Cup Semi 4-3 against Liverpool was amazing and the others etched in my mind were beating West Ham at the Playoff final in Cardiff and Watford in the Playoff final at Wembley. The point is 4 out of those 5 we were a 2nd tier side. The excitement of those seasons was having something to play for. Is it just the dull football that's made it all rubbish? Is the Premier League always just 'good for a while' for a club like ours. Is someone offered you the next 20 years in the Premier League but you wouldn't win any silverware against yoyoing between the leagues but having a handful of exciting promotion seasons which would you choose?

I agree & concour with all that Pikester. I think we'll see a generation gap here, with supporters like myself who are over 50 & supporters who didnt know footy existed before 1992(i jest) I remember the 69 promotion under Bert Head, the 79 under Terry V, the Allison cup run as a 3rd Div club in 76. The years we spent in the 2nd/1st/Championship trying to make the next step & when we did, the pain of relegation & then the joy of promotion again(several times). To be able to go to Wembley & see Palace play is a joy on its own, remember we've only lost twice there(i think), or is it 3? Anyhoo, for prestige being in the EPL is the be-all for clubs with the coverage, prestige & kudos it brings not to mention the money. So, it was better(imho) when we were in the 2nd tier for joy, enjoyment, pain of loss & great players we had.

For the glory I agree with the Burnley game and the Liverpool semi-final and various promotions. After many years of dire football in the 3rd division south were relegated to the newly formed 4th division. In my opinion they were the most exciting days for Palace fans with 9 goals against Barrow and Accrington Stanley and 8 against Watford along with a few defeats. There were plenty of goals, plenty of noise and record crowds for the bottom division

The problem with this season is that we have beaten the rubbish around us (like Brighton) but not had any decent scalps to remember. That and not actually being there has made it a drab season for me. Staying above Brighton is good but a bit predictable now! Beating Chelsea at Stamford Bridge for the first time in 5000 years, or whatever it was, was certainly a highlight for me as was the FA Cup fun. Hopefully others will post other highlights from the last few seasons and I will remember them better. Portsmouth and Stockport away to stay up will always be a couple of my favourite away trips, along with Liverpool at Villa Park in 1990. Coventry away to get into the play-offs. There were many, many, awful matches too I just (thankfully) forget most of them. If there was a guarantee of coming back up again, I'd take yoyo but there is as much chance of plummeting so I'd take more PL years without silverware.
It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses. |

Personally I don’t care what division we are in, it’s about Palace, not the opposition. It’s about friendship, family and a sense of identity. Would rather watch us beating Crewe than losing to Man U. There is life outside the premiership and it’s awesome.

A lot of my best memories are tied to standing on the Holmesdale: always the same people around, you made 'football friends' with them, got to know them well. Bitterly cold winter cup match nights, all huddled together in the middle of the terrace, trying to conserve communal body heat, or being able to wander off and chat to a mate further along. Then there was the 'pass the hat' on corners: every time we got one, everybody put 10p in the hat hand it passed on one person round the group. If you were holding it at the final whistle, you got the contents! (You then had to buy everyone a beer so it could be a loss making win). Fun times - which there doesn't seem to be much left of these days........

The thing I'd challenge back on is the majority of the games in between those 'moments' were rubbish. You've named 5 moments across about 35 years and excluded all the dross. In recent years you've got a win at the Etihad against the champions, two wins in a row at Old Trafford, winning Gerrard's last game at Anfield, regularly beating Chelsea home and away, winning at the Emirates, a team good enough to get to an FA Cup Final, watching Bolasie, Zaha, Cabaye, Sakho (when he was on it) who wouldn't have hung around for 5 minutes in the Championship. Plus, we wouldn't have the academy team we currently have - they'd all be elsewhere. This season has been really dull, not helped by not being able to watch it, but a Premier League season gives you memorable moments every year. We won at Old Trafford this year. You may get 2 exciting promotion seasons in 20 by not being here, but the other 18 will be heinous to watch with nothing memorable and that isn't being appropriately recognised. Watching a dead rubber against Arsenal is better than watching a dead rubber against Doncaster with Shefki Kuqi, John Oster and and Gary Borrowdale running around.

To answer the question - Play Off Final v West Ham in Cardiff; what a day But even though this season might have been a little bit of a damp squib, I'm sure the euphoria felt by Palace fans alike when we beat Man Utd and Brighton must be similar, probably even better, than any high of a fan of a big six club. And that is what staying in the Premier League is; grinding out results against teams of a similar financial resource, some disappointing defeats and a few heavy loses. But there will always be a few incredible days each season which plaster over all the other disappointments. I don't envy supporters of any other club!!

I'm looking forward to Europe the season after next. Most fun games for me were the playoff win against Blackburn. Liverpool in the semi final probably the best ever. Which, admittedly, was in the highest league. I don't miss the away ends in the old second division, but there were good times.

Not sure if I agree with the bit in bold. In the Championship, it almost always felt that we were in the hunt for promotion or survival, it just seemed like every game mattered more than it does now. We're just stuck in midtable and the season is over by March every year. I've been going since 2000 and whilst in the Championship I can remember two final day survivals, Dougie steering us to safety from the relegation zone, two promotions via the playoffs, two failed play offs and two runs to the league cup semi final. Without doubt, the football was worse in the Championship, but we certainly had more drama than we do now. I couldn't give a monkey's who we're playing against, a win is a win and it feels great. Next year will be tough with a new manager/squad, but if we end up in a relegation fight, it will be far more exciting. In answer to the OP, I'd take the yoyo option, although I'd trade for a Cup win/season in Europe (which I don't think will happen).

I said this earlier... however it's all subjective.
A season juggling between 17th and 18th and surviving with a week to go is far more enjoyable than mid table nothingness, I can explain why. At 18th you are aiming for higher, you need higher. 12th, you can't reach 7th and 18th is a distant memory, what's the variable? Finishing 14th is 12 wins a season. 3 extra wins over 38 matches, over 9 months. Roughly 4 extra draws instead of loses, that's nothing, in terms of season long enjoyment. This is why a cup run is so important... those 6 extra wins a season, mean so much more when you have a mid table season. We should be aiming for semi finals of both cups, for the fans.... when in the prem, it's all about sustaining that place.... to keep the funding and the cups are the icing on the cake. Trouble is, we have ben abysmal under Hodgson in the cups. Imagine finishing 13th each season and reaching the semi of either/or cups. That's far more enjoyable. Otherwise, all we are doing is balancing the books.
