I think this has moved beyond facial expressions. Wilf is arguably still our best player (although only if you ignore recent performances), but he doesn't want to be at Palace and has publicly stated this. Football isn't just about stats and points on the board. I got more joy this season from Mitchell scoring his first goal with his shoulder than anything Wilf did, even if in the grand scheme of things his contribution on paper was a fraction of Wilf's. Of course we shouldn't give him away for peanuts, but equally I think it would be detrimental to keep him tied up under the holmesdale. Each to his own, but don't act like your opinion is superior just because people have the audacity to question Wilf's future role at the club.

Debating whether or not to sell at £40m is perfectly reasonable , as is contemplating the effect of retaining a player who so desperately wants to play for a bigger team whilst he still can.

My point is twofold; firstly, and without attributing this argument to you personally if you haven't made it, the idea that Zaha is some kind of malignant influence, sulking about the place downing tools is plainly wrong on the statistical evidence alone. He's wanted to move for years, but has always produced for us when the move doesn't happen. Secondly, he is very simply and quite plainly our best player, and I cannot fathom the logic in selling your best player unless you are absolutely certain that your side will be better for it. Yes we could re-invest the money, but in who? Who will carry the weight Zaha has? That's my point about Eze, who we have all warmed to greatly, but who is miles and miles away from being as effective a winner of points as Zaha.

When Eze scored at Sheffield United the number of posts attributing significance to Zahas (evidently insufficiently exuberant) celebration was in double figures within half an hour. I wasn't trying to come across all superior to anyone, but to be honest nonsense like that needs to be given the appropriate short shrift.

Knock everyone's penalties off and he isn't top scorer.

According to whoscored he wasn't our best player - [Link]

Zaha had a really fast start. 4 goals and 0 assists in his last 21 games paints a different story, a fairly concerning one.

You're entitled to your opinion, and undeniably he's a good player. However, based on his form in the last 6 months there is a very valid question around taking £40m for a guy who is 29 in November vs getting that form of the last 6 months for another 2 years and him going for free.

Rather than assists, I am thinking of chances created, which either sky or bt showed recently, and he was (as you'd expect) ahead by some distance. He is the top scorer - why would you take penalties away?

I don't see why the opinion of whoscroed should be given any weight - even the most sophisticated formula cannot quantify the extent to which Zaha occupies opposing defenders, or the oppositions managers plans, or gives hope to his teammates when they know that even at his worst he can produce something from nothing. We have nobody like him when he isn't there.

The question of whether to cash in is perfectly reasonable, and the answer (as always) depends on how his contribution is assessed against the cost of replicating that contribution in his absence, against the fee we'd get. The thing I've little time for is people acting like he wouldn't be a loss - that just nonsense.

ambrose7 makes a good point though, in that the last 6 months he hasn't been performing that well and really hasn't been our best player. At the end of the season Eze was starting to show more of an influence while Wilf just repeatedly ran down blind alleys, lost possession and got frustrated. It was also noticeable that teams stopped doubling up on him like they used to.

Personally, in an ideal world, he'll change his mind with a new manager and commit the rest of his days to us. I never doubt his effort, but when he isn't happy it really does seem to show in his performances. If he isn't committed to us though then I want him to go as for me personally I don't want a player who believes he is being held against his will.

Last season he was our top scorer, top assist provider, and best player. Yet again.

And yes, he was miles and miles better than Eze, who has potential but at the moment seems to excel largely against Sheffield United.

I think you'll find Eze has that honour with 5 assists to Zaha's 2.

As for Zaha being our best player - before the New Year yes, since then, no. IMHO both Eze (especially in a central role) and Benteke have performed better than Wilf as attacking players this calendar year. IMO Zaha has made far too many poor decisions in recent months through being either selfish or too clever when a quick lay-off or cross could have reaped rewards for the team.

I imagine it must feel something akin to a curse for him playing for us. His career could have been competing for premier league wins, latter-stage champions league matches, and...glamour.

Instead he got --in his mind-- badly advised to sign a 5 year contract to be our sole creative outlet, forever playing off scraps in poor teams. And getting booted.

Clearly it eats him up, that gap between his achievements and potential achievements and the pain only gets worse each summer.

I'm sure money matters but he is a great player who must feel acutely that his career has been wasted.

I hugely appreciate what he's done for us. I'm not foolish enough to think we take a low ball this summer, but i do have some sympathy.

The Zaha conundrum hasn't really changed, and probably won't: His value to us remains higher than the fee anyone will pay.

Even if we all agree (and I don't really) that his performances have declined that, along with his increasing age and reducing contract length, simply means that the fee we could get reduces too. That leads him back to where he started - his value to us is greater than the fee we would get, even if both have reduced in line with each other.

It remains very, very risky to take the money and lose the player. £40m can disappear like a puff of smoke in this league. West Ham spent nearly that on Haller. Newcastle spent it on Joelinton. Even if you come down a step to around £25 - £30m you are not getting Zaha quality very often. Ayoze Perez, Pablo Fornals and Alex Iwobi for instance are all decent, but cost the bulk of the £40m we'd get for Zaha without touching the sides of his influence.

Southampton, Wolves, Everton, Arsenal, Sours, Leicester, Villa, West Ham

Basically middle to upper middle table teams, especially where an extra bonus of hurting us exists
