I almost feel quite bad for Wilf, wages aside, he's probably harming his career by staying with us (which due to the contract he signed is out of his control). Once his contract expires, he'll be at an age where he'll be undesriable as a winger to the top clubs he beleives he should be playing for.

He is more than capable of playing for a top European side, whether that be in the UEFA cup or Champions League and and player of his stature would want that as an immediade goal. However, bearing in mind some of the players he currently play with that are way below his level, but I don't think any of the top 4 in the Premiership could give him regular football.

I don't get the "whinging" thing, personally and as a PAlace fan, it's completely irrelevant to his performance. Any other player would be commended for passion and personally, I'd rather have 11 players who care and show emotion in the shirt, than 11 that quietly fade away when the game isn't going their way.

If we got £40m for him this summer, it would be good business, but we've become so reliant on him that we don't see that there might be someone available to replace him.

I dont go along with that at all. I dont think Wilf is demonstrating passion at all - its frustration at himself and his team mates and its getting the better of him. His goal record this season may still get him his move. But by his own admission his usual attributes of dribbling, going past player isnt there this season. I respect Wilf as our greatest ever player and dont think negatively of him wanting to better himself elsewhere but bottom line is he signed the contract and a no club has met Palaces valuation of him to date. I love Wilf but I would rather we protect the club than facilitate a player career path. All Palace have done is ask him to adhere to the terms of his contract. The remuneration terms of the contract are reportedly pretty good.. so it is difficult to feel sorry for him being kept prisoner at Palace. Although like I said i have sympathy for his own personal ambitions. He should be frustrated at the agents hes sacked more than Parish and co.

You say that you feel sorry for him wages aside but his wage demands are a limiting factor in who would sign him.

He earns £130,000 per week and it was rumoured a year ago that he was looking for £200,000 per week to move.

That is the same as what Harry Kane and Mo Salah earn and with the best will in the world Zaha isn't in their league.

Added to that is the fact that many of the sort of top European clubs that he wants to join are haemorrhaging money and selling off their players to make ends meet so I doubt whether he has much chance of the move that he wants at the wage level that he wants.

If he genuinely wishes to test himself at the highest level he could always reduce his wage demands to take account of the new Covid level financial circumstances that many of the clubs find themselves but how likely is that?

I agree with the first part of your post as well ME but this last paragraph is the crux of the matter. In short:

How much is he prepared to reduce his wage demands in order to get the kind of move he wants? That will determine how much he really wants top table football.

The only club involved in Europe that might come for him (IMO) is Spurs (and they'll be playing in the new third tier competition, but that's better than nothing I suppose). That would test his allegiance to Arsenal!

Surely his wage demands are not the point - The thing preventing him from moving is Palace not accepting a transfer bid for him, or one not being made.

Perhaps if he let it be known he'd play for £50k a week it might prompt a club to consider the whole package (transfer fee plus player wages) to be a bit more attractive than if he wanted the earth in wages, but either way if nobody meets Palace's fee then Wilfs wage demands don't matter.

He does also give a big old chunk of money to charity out of every party packet, so I'm not sure he's a greedy bloke.

I thought this too until I listen to him talking about the club. He has a genuine affection for us, that is rare with footballers and footballers of his ability. Just my opinion though. If a defender or central midfielder "moans and whinges" at his team mates, it's seen more favourably as them showing leadership for example.

I agree with this also. Although not knowing the guy personally, he gives a lot back to charity, the community etc... I'm sure for the right club that meets his ambition levels, he would take a pay cut.

What about if he is the only person that doesn't congratulate a team mate for scoring as he thought that he should have passed to him instead - as happened very recently

Petulant but still has the desire to contribute to goals. Footballers/athletes are wired differently, something I don't think the fan can fully understand.
