Well, I mean his opinions on how people were treated due to their race fed into his draft evasion, narrowly avoiding 5 years in prison as well as having his belts taken away. That cost him 4 years out of the ring. While it could be slanted towards 'that was his actions, not opinions', his refusal was clearly a consequence of what he believed in.

Sure, though the draft was pretty universally applied....well, to the working classes anyway.

Also let's not forget that Ali's own beliefs didn't exist in a bubble. He grew up during racial segregation and was routinely denied service in stores and the like growing up due to his race, so I'm not sure that the idea that the country was free or the politics allowed him endless freedoms is the full picture.

And his response to the early part of his life was to support racial segregation. However, the organisation Ali supported went much further than that....as I stated previously.

This was not a universal position in black communities by any means.

The point is that this was tolerated, in a time that's deemed far harsher than modern times.

What you're actually highlighting and unhappy with is that you feel life is more difficult for people like you now, and that you don't care or give much thought to times and situations where it was far more difficult for others.

Nope you are incorrect. While I have a bias towards my own ethnicity it certainly isn't true that I 'don't care' about how other ethnicities are treated. My ideas on social conservatism certainly extends to other ethnicities and there is a lot in what Malcolm X said...for example, that I agreed with....though obviously not the celebrating of white deaths.

I resent the level of black abortion for example and the way social liberalism has turned their communities into social welfare servitude...destroyed families and so on...I could go on but some Candace Owen or Larry Elder videos could fill you in.

The cricket decision is clearly way OTT, but as is this rose tinted view of how other people took the highroad when they clearly didn't. It as clearly a time where the lived experience for people like him was beyond any societal restrictions of freedoms that you'll ever have to deal with.

I can appreciate that a cricketer shouldn't be engaged in behaviour like this.....however, the ECB itself chooses to be politically engaged in sport. It is deliberately excluding people dependent upon its politics.

What Robinson typed up as a teenager were bad taste jokes. I think it was suitable that he apologised (though I thought he groveled myself) but regardless it should not have required anymore than that.

So we agree that this could have been handled better.

Funnily enough I don’t think he should comment on any national team selection issues. Perhaps you disagree

Fair enough. It’s not as though any sportsmen, musicians or actors ever comment on Government policy.

I agree on the abortion point. That's the trouble with very polarised political environments that leave people feeling the need to lurch to the extreme of a view. In this case it ends up with something that is depressing and unfortunate at best almost being deemed as an act of celebration and empowerment.

Ideally this wouldn't be the case, and there would be actual paths out of poverty. Right now I wouldn't say that either party offer much of anything (the left push welfare, and the right a 'pull of your bootstraps' idea that is blind to realities of life and generational wealth. They push token standouts because its easy and blacks cast votes they essentially don't believe they will get and don't want counted. Dems just do 'enough' to keep them on side while encouraging a 'woe is me' narrative). Getting a decent health care system in place wouldn't be a bad start for all as that's something everyone may need at some point, and that can still make or break working people stateside depending on several factors. Possibly too practical a goal in today's political climate though.

I concur with the Robinson thoughts too. Beyond apologising I'm not sure what he can possibly do. It's not like he said these things a couple of weeks back, or even a couple of years. His tweets came off as an immature teenager testing the boundaries of bad taste, rather than someone who hated or even disliked this person or that. There's little point in punishing someone for beliefs they likely don't even hold.

For cricket fans the speculation on whom it is could be intriguing as the speculation on our next manager.

Let's hope that it isn't Joe Root

Exactly so Badger. My sentiments entirely.

I remember at school, one of the girls had been photographed in a somewhat compromising position on a Polaroid and just one, rather grubby picture was passed around the school for the boys gratification. That's about as wide a circulation as you could achieve in olden days.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.
