The England team or the Liverpool team?

Neither of those teams were the right set of players. If anything the one thing both of those teams needed above all else was defensive solidity.

Liverpool was in freefall when Hodgson took over there and he didn’t do any worse than "king Kenny" after him. He was brought in during very difficult circumstances with chaos behind the scenes and the ownership changing. Moreover, he wasn’t even given 6 months. Anyone judging Roy hard on his Liverpool tenure is being unbelievably harsh, IMO.

Of course, England can be more accurately described as a disaster due to the Iceland but, still, that squad was nowhere near the standard required to win a major tournament. And he should still be credited with giving a number of young players their debuts during his period (including Wilf) - many of whom are still regular fixtures in the national side today.

At Fulham he certainly demonstrated a willingness to progress the football when given a budget to build the team. Same can be said of his time at Blackburn and when he had the tools at his disposal here, we played very good stuff under Roy.

I’m sure many would argue that Dyche has only worked with what he’s had at his disposal in the same way Roy did with us. And he may well play different football if backed with investment. The problem is, whilst it could turn out to be true, unlike with Roy, we don’t have any evidence to suggest that would be the case. And whilst he was never really given money at Burnley, on the occasions he has been, the signings he has made would suggest he doesn’t want to deviate from what he does.

Sean Dyche is an excellent manager. What he’s achieved at Burnley has been remarkable. He deserves all the plaudits he gets for it. But I’ll reiterate - pushing Roy out the door, after everything he achieved at the club, with no investment, on footballing grounds, only to bring in Sean Dyche, would be unnecessary and bizarre on a level that evades even us.

I was firmly in the Roy in camp. For me he earned this summers investment. But we are where we are. It’s just when I watch people who relentlessly called for his head only to rally behind Sean Dyche, I have to push back against that. It would make no sense whatsoever.

Mate think you need to take those “Roy Rose coloured glasses” off..!!

This is the same Roy who inexplicably put Harry Kane on corner taking duties..!!

I agree we weren’t probably good enough to win the tournament but we were certainly good enough to get out of the last 16 stage - which culminated in probably the worst England performance in my memory against Iceland..!!

After which Roy resigned - and then famously questioned why he should have to face the media to answer any questions on our poor performance - as he had already resigned..!!

IMO Dyche would be a significant step up from Roy - if nothing else at least he’ll take responsibility for his own actions unlike Roy..!!

Who pushed Roy out ? He has said in interviews many times since it was HIS decision.

Don't be silly. We only have to wait another 97 days until we appoint a manager to beat Celtic's recent record!

A lot of names have been mentioned to be in the running but who really is in the know? Cooper is interested...is he really? Who says? Lampard was in talks...was he really? How do we really know? Was one of you guys in the meeting with him and Parish....I doubt it very much.
The only reason that the names mentioned have been mentioned is because they are out of work or got a very average squad into the playoffs so are likely candidates. Who's to say that Paulo Fonseca hasn't been talks? Yet he has barely been mentioned on this post.
For all we know we're gonna end up with some manager from Japan like Celtic have done. Howe was the man to take over at Celtic but they end up with Ange Postecoglou. No one saw that coming. I have a feeling we will all be very surprised and shocked when a manager is announced. Maybe some guy from Czech Republic or Romanaia. Who knows. Time will tell

The Howe factor again.

Agreed with us supposedly then went to Burnley, supposedly agreed with Celtic then didn't arrive there either.

Responsibility Deficit Disorder is a medical condition. Symptoms include inability to be corrected when wrong, false sense of superiority, desire to share personal info no else cares about, general hubris. It's a medical issue rather than pure arrogance.

I do agree in that I am suprised Wilder has not been in the mix. He is worthy of at the very least being considered.

According to the media Wilder was going to West Brom but it seems that their chairman refused to have him there so there is obviously something going on that we don't know about.
