Because we always do. Look at every transfer window in many a year. It's bloody obvious where we are lacking and what we need but we sit back and see targets go elsewhere then frantically try to make poorer signings at the last minute.

I cannot see that Roy's departure was an unplanned bolt from the blue so we should have been making plans and getting someone in place. As usual we haven't and that cannot bode well for either signing new players or those out of contract. I fear some we may well want to keep will walk away as we dilly dally.

Just noticed that Parish has given an interview to the BBC discussing Zaha and also the managerial situation.
He said there is a lot of interest in the job but that it’s challenging to get the right candidate.
The mandate is to get a manager who can win games, but also bring through young players.
That latter requirement would seem to rule out the old stagers like Allardyce.
Nothing earth shattering, but if it’s a recent interview iI wouldn’t anticipate an imminent appointment.

Repeating myself here, but why do so many of you feel doing business late on in a transfer window (mostly for players, but now for a new manager) to be some kind of incompetence on the part of the club?

Surely you must appreciate that when making a new signing Palace need someone who is an improvement on what we have, as well as being within our price range, to come on to the market? That might well mean waiting for their current club to sign someone else, which they might only do once a club above them have done likewise.

Then of course the selling club must agree to our bid (which they will likely only do once they have tried to start an auction), then the player (or manager) must agree to come (which they will only do once they have explored their options in full, which might mean waiting).

It's not like buying something on Amazon. Selling clubs don't have clear price tags on their players that we can just stroll up and meet on day one of a transfer window being open. Often if we bid on day one, it just starts the auction early and gives it more time to escalate out of our reach.

The idea that Palace (or anyone outside the huge clubs) can simply choose to get business done early is nonsense. It might be possible from time to time, but often it's plainly not.

Yes, Parish could have gone for Lampard or Howe months ago, but who is to say that he didn't offer one or other the job only for them to say no? Or to say 'I'll see what other offers I get and let you know'?

I'll tell you who - none of us, that's for certain.

And if Parish hasn't offered it to either of Howe or Lampard, who is to say he hasn't interviewed them both and found them to be poor candidates? Or candidates who want unreasonable demand to be met? Or even reasonably good candidates but possibly not ones who are as good as one or two others that were not available to speak during the season?

Again, none of us, that's who.

Almost all new signings (player, staff or manager) require multiple parties to agree the deal once they have explored various alternatives. Palace are but one party, and not the controlling one.
