The controversy centered around taking the hat off whenever they saw a white person. The complaint was that black people would be whipped or beaten if they didn't. One man testified that a white man took out a revolver to him when he wouldn't take his hat off.

I agree Badger. Dreadful statue and completely irrelevant in London.

 


Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.
