The plan for 2024 is for a work called 850 Improntas by Teresa Margolies, a Mexican conceptual artist and consists of casts of the faces of 850 trans people from London and around the world. The "life masks" will be arranged around the plinth in the form of a tzompantli, a skull rack from Mesoamerican civilisations.

it's true. The statue in honour of the terrorist and racist, Chilembwe, goes up in 2022. The 'work' of Margolies replaces it in 2024. According to the BBC, most of the 850 trans people are 'sex workers'. The piece actually looks like an oversized egg-box.

Nothing on that link persuades that he should be commemorated with a statue, certainly not in UK.

I agree. It has though created debate and evaluation, which is never a bad thing.

One man's terrorist and racist is another man's freedom fighter and hero. It all depends on which side of the fence history has cast you.

To step back and re-evaluate is never a bad thing.

Yes. They need to be seen in their context of the times when it happened and the events leading up to it. These were oppressed people being exploited and driven to desperation. There is a great deal more involved here than just one brutal incident.

Was it just one brutal incident though? Whether oppressed or not, he was a murderer and should not be commemorated with a statue. Statues of those involved in the slave trade are being removed, many of whom did a lot of good in their lifetimes, slavery ( albeit abhorrent) was an accepted part of life at the time and therefore, using your argument, surely their involvement should be seen in context of the time.

This is true, perhaps a referendum should be held to see if the public want it
Hope the move went ok, by the way

By your 'logic', presumably we should have statues of other terrorist, racist murderers, such as Hitler, there at some point?

Maybe you also sympathise with the agenda described. Other opinions are available.

I'm not sure it replaces it. It goes around the plinth. I think they are also putting a statue of a missionary on the plinth with Chilembwe. Thomas Chorley or something. Chilembwe will be oversized and Chorley life size. Don't ask me why, these f***ers have lost the plot big time. There's postmodernism and there's taking the piss.

We don't know that, but from the account it seems unlikely that he was actually a murderer but more likely leading an uprising against oppression that resulted in deaths on both sides.

I don't disagree with your second point. Judging yesterday's people by today's values seems unwise to me. By all means learn from what happened, but judge people in the round.

I very much doubt it. It takes a lot of direct knowledge to even start to do that. Ask my wife!

How these things are decided is a mystery to me. Local issues certainly can involve local consultations, but the square has rather more significance that just what Londoners think ought to be there. It's a statement of the nation's view being placed in the centre of the capital.

The move was stressful, and I have been very busy for many weeks. Slowing down a little now though.
