Pretty much this mate.

Plus when Ward goes, it would be nice to give him a bit of a send off. He’s been a good servant.

Yes indeed; and is not Cahill still younger than the Italian CBs?

Cahill is younger than Chiellini but older than Bonucci.
Bonucci is 34,Cahill 35 and Chiellini 36.

A little here speculating about the options Vieira is look at, including Cahill.

Give Cahill and Ward 1 year extensions (Cahill is an experienced head that I think has something to offer still to the younger players around him and Ward, just so he can have his testimonial).

Townsend, we can definitely replace IMO.

I feel like it depends on how much wages they want. Ward and Townsend should be bench players at this point in their careers. Townsend isn't that old, but he's lost some pace that was his main benefit. They are the type of player that I don't want starting, but if we get an injury and they have to play, then I'd be happy we had them on the bench, because they are solid and known quantities.

Cahill could still be a starter, but he's hurt all the time. So I don't think he's worth bringing back. We have too many players already who are hurt all the time. And he's too expensive for someone who can't stay healthy. We had Sakho already for that.

So I'd re-sign Ward and Townsend to less money, as squad players, and let Cahill go.

We have so many holes in our roster at the moment, it's worrying. If Wilf leaves on top of Eze being out, and all this turnover, we're probably f-ed.

2020 Feb. (Van Aanholt) Palace 1 - 0 Newcastle

In my view, there is a significant risk in the transition from old to new players with the assumption that all the younger ones who get signed will rapidly adapt to the demands of the PL. That's certainly far from being the case when you look at the history of similar situations.

Hence, I would be inclined to renew Cahill, Ward, Townsend and Clyne; they have really significant PL experience and mixed with an injection of younger blood it could work well.

The alternative of a complete clear out - beyond what has already taken place - is, in my judgement, fraught with considerable risk.

I don't think people understand this is a massive change of direction for Palace, Rightly or Wrongly it will be youth all the way with 3/4 older players, all the old guard will be gone, New Manager, New style only time will tell if it was right or wrong, i sincerely hope it succeeds

IMHO i would be happy to give all a 1 year contract as long as it was partly appearance based e.g. Cahill was supposedly on £75k a week.

I would offer him maybe £40k plus £40k a starting appearance.

I think the criticism of Ward is a little unfair. Yes agree he's not going to pull up any trees but a dependable performer. Has a decent fitness record and we looked more solid with him at RB as opposed to Clyne who looked quite shaky at times.

We need to be realistic we will not sign 10 players this pre season.

That we have just cancelled out first preseason friendly - probably on the basis that we don't have a team to put out - says quite a lot.

Cahill Townsend and Ward are obviously temporary but all have acres of experience and would be reassuring squad members. Quite a lot to be said for having solid experience to fall back on and let's face it there will be times in the season when we will are likely down to bare bones and that's when it will be reassuring to one of these guys fit in

if we give them three contracts, it will hinder the younger players development, Rich-B, Hannam are both 20 not 16, and Rak-Sakyi and Olise are townsend replacements, and you are talking at least 150k a week for that three, youth is the way forward

The start of the PL is only a month away.
No backroom staff for Vieira announced.
A host of players out of contract and only 1 signing.
A pre-season friendly cancelled.

The 'Optics' don't look good.

The excuse was we had picked up injuries. That may be at least part of the truth. But let’s face it, we barely have a team at the moment anyway, If the developers are that far forward, to consider viable for first team action, why couldn’t some of them have a run out against Pompey, ? it would seem they are not that far forward. So that doesn’t look so good. And the over riding fact remains that with just weeks to go we have some major vacancies to fill. And one has to ask , even if we get a number of replacements in will they be up to speed for the start of the new season?
