Kennards where the first shop in britain to have all glass window at the front of the shop. in the 1930s

My mum was a silver service waitress in Kennards' Blue Room restaurant which was adjacent to a fabulous Soda Bar.

I used to go and wait for her to finish serving lunches and the bloke at the Soda Bar would make me fresh waffles with jam and ice cream.

And, yes, the famous Kennards Arcade which ran from the North End down to Drummond Road sold a wide variety of exotic things, including animals and donkey rides were a highlight.

And, still on the subject of my mum, she moved from Kennards to M&S and became their store detective where she nicked many a rogue shoplifter.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

Yes I remember seeing the soda bar, not sure I ever sampled the delights though, due to lack of funds

I recall frequenting 'Scarlets' from time to time, which at the time was the haunt of a few of our players.

There were quite a few ladies who were rather easy on the eyes, with gyrating hips on the dance floor.

Yes, had a drink with John Salako there.great place, was always a slightly older crowd, until i got old.

Did anyone else visit the Bier Keller, which was in a basement below Marks and Spencer, entrance on the high street?

Yes,was only talking about it to a pal in croydon the other week, we were standing outside, always a dark woody place but great for a bit of cover.

was very popular with office girlies getting on the vino.
there was (is?) bishops wine bar, tucked in the corner of the entrance to upper level of whigift.
a bit of a secret drinking hole, with hole being the operative word!

Think its "was" regarding Bishops king.

Rather topical is the great exhibition building after which our club was named. Burnt down in 1936,

beautiful building.
must've been amazing.

I think Willo possibly went as a young lad, with a copy of 'the dandy ' or the topper, under his arm.

My great grandfather was a master of ceremonies there and his brother, my great uncle Sid, was a master craftsman responsible for creating and building exhibition stands.

When the Palace burnt down Sid was distraught and suffered a complete breakdown. Tragic. But I remember him as a lovely, gentle man. Lived in Addiscombe.
