I can't help but feel Abraham's the sort of player there has been a lot of noise about for quite a while but has not quite justified the hype around him. Don't think he has developed as well as he could and if he wasn't from a `big` club would opinions of him be as high?

The difference in supposed transfer fee (40mill compared to 15mill) would leave a massive 25mill to be invested elsewhere whilst the prolonged cost in wages would also have a significant difference.

We always seem to have a habit for being linked to a player several transfer windows before we sign them, and we have been linked to Dembele for several.

I'd rather we took a bit of a risk given the financial differences and went for Dembele.

Id argue the opposite; if he wasn’t coming from a big club he’d probably get the recognition he deserves - he’d had two 20+ goal seasons in the championship by the time he was 21... that’s pretty exceptional.

Even last season with limited opportunities he averaged a goal every 180 mins - his mins/goal numbers are impressive wherever he has been.

I view him similar to a younger Lukaku - a bit rough round the edges and doesn’t contribute loads outside of scoring, but give him minutes and he’ll get goals. Players like that with very good athletic attributes and genuine goalscoring instincts are very hard to stop.

Despite all that, you’re right that the price difference is huge and in our position I don’t think it’s sensible to spend so big on one player with so many gaps in the squad.

Edouard can be a frustrating player to watch. He almost always tries to side foot or chip shots rather than put his laces through. Looks great when it works but very tame when it doesn’t.

Either would be a significant improvement on what we have.
Although we are yet to see properly what Mateta is all about.

Either would be fine for me simply because it would be an improvement to what we already got from the starting choices.

I see TA more of an in the box and set me up type player whereas Édouard is an all-rounder that can play, dribble and go on solos when he's up for it.

The price differential is huge so factoring that it's got to be Édouard for me. I was also a longer fan of his than Tammy and even advocated previous season ago for Palace to go for him, but in hindsight it might be better value now post pandemic (e.g. Sancho to United now than last season situation).

I think both players would consider Palace a downgrade for them (I was almost certain Édouard would link back with Rodgers again at Leicester), but at least with Édouard he could see it as a stepping stone into the Premier league joining us, coupled with Vieira et al effect.

One things for certain, whilst we're not that short on numbers up front (Benteke, Ayew, Mateta) with Zaha making the first team #s, Mateta is technically a loan which needs a financial outlay to make permanent, Batshuayi and Wickham are gone too so all it would take is for Wilf and Benteke injured to put us in a predicament. We're also relying on Benteke to continue his end of season form which there's a lot of concern to suggest he could sustain.

One final key comment is that we still need to understand how PV wants Palace to play. When Klopp joined Liverpool he knew immediately that Benteke wouldn't work to his system hence he got shifted. If Benteke isn't getting the service, particularly from airborne crosses for him to get on the end of, then I think we consider a sale sooner rather than later and get the right profile to make work. Either way, Benteke is not the future of our forward line even though he might be now, so decisions need to be made up front within the next 12 mths.

Again, neither is an improvement on Benteke.

Is that the same Benteke who has scored 31 goal in 137 games and cost the club about 60m so far.

The "same" Benteke??

Which one? The fantastic striker who ended the season, or the hefty lump who spent years falling over in the centre circle?

That's the conundrum as we await his return to discover which version will reveal itself this season. If he declares himself injury free and fit that may bode well because he stated that several times as his form improved in the latter part of last season.

HOWEVER, will he fit the style PV will want us to play? Judging by the Walsall game, possibly not and that may be one of the reasons we have this current thread re Edouard and Abraham. With Benteke, Mateta and Ayew, we're not short of a no. 9. Add in both Wilf and Schlupp as forward players and we're are reasonably placed with what we have.
