We have for sure raised the quality of our squad in this window. Just hope the manager will be a bit pragmatic when the "play ball out for defence" does not work.
Our DNA consists of hard work and quick breaks. Joachim Andersen showed last season that he is capable of some great, long passes.

I wouldn't hold your breath about compromise on that front. He was trained as a manager at City and it is a core belief apparent from pretty much every interview he's given on his style.

When he went to New York I think I'm right in saying that he was prepared to ride out a really sticky start in his first season in the belief it would come good. There he was brought in to replace a manager who was "pragmatic" and had to work within a strict salary cap system where he was unable to go out and buy players who suited his beliefs.

Think there may well be compromises made but that is more likely on formation than style - that is the message from his time at Nice where he was far from predictable in how he set up.

When the PV doubters are judging him in what is a very tough run of opening matches, worth bearing in mind how we did in the equivalent fixtures last season. Taking the first ten games bar Brentford, last season we got 5 points out of the 9 matches, scoring 4 and conceding 16

It's more a reasonable presumption than a guess, based on what Vieira, the players and various people to have worked with Vieira have said in the media, along with the limited highlights I've seen from preseason. If even a mediocre championship side can have great joy disrupting your passing from the back then you probably aren't that good at it, or at least not yet.

The Watford game will tell us more. I remember leaving Selhurst after watching us draw with Schalke in De Boers final preseason game, and feeling extremely concerned that his ideology had nothing in common with our club and players. Hopefully we'll see a more pragmatic streak in Vieira.

I'm not saying we'll be crap or that Vieira will fail - I very much hope for the opposite of course. Every hope is coupled with a fear though, and mine is that if the manager introduces too great a tactical change too soon, the wheels will come off and not go back on again.

This is very true Dave, and it was only due to Roy having credit in the bank that he rode the storm out, 5 points out of a possible 27 is sacking material territory.

I suspect that at that early point in the season there wasn't a suitable replacement and Parish didn't / doesn't want the reputation of being a "quick to fire" chairman after the FdB fiasco.
I expect Parish realises that with Vieira this is very much a work in progress no matter how we start the season. Plenty to look forward to!

Just to clarify - I was looking at the first 9 games this season bar Brentford, and comparing with the results we got in those fixtures last season - eg in our first 3 games this season - Chelsea we lost 0-4, Spurs (H) 1-1, Liverpool 0-2. Trying to make the point that these first games for PV are tough matches.

Sky Sports is today quoting Vieira as saying that he has has a “good conversation” with Wilf and hopes he will stay at Palace.

Meanwhile The Athletic is quoting Nuno as saying this about Kane “I have not spoken to him yet”.

I think we have the right manager!

I’m looking forward to the new season in a way I’ve not for 4 years. We all know how badly that turned out but it’s worth remembering we do still have an experienced team.

Yes a lot of players have left but most of them were not key performers. Jeez most of them weren’t fit to even get on the bench.

This means PV can take his time to impose a new style. As FdB promised he would.

I too have read that PV’s tactical approach at Nice suggests he’s not the purist that his Man City past would have you believe.

Most importantly, we’ve actually bought some promising youth. I’m most excited by the defensive additions.

Ball playing good defenders are hard to source and we’ve not had the funds - outside of Sakho - to get real young quality. Mate of mine who follows Fulham says we’ve got a gem in Andersen.

So fingers crossed we can retain some Royball at the start of the season. Keep it tight and sneak a draw or win until we have time to move into a new style.

I'm really hoping this goes well. Vieira comes across really well and seems to have a calm almost father-like quality about him, which hopefully gives the youngsters the confidence to grow. Of course it will come down to results and performances, but with patience I think we're at the start of something exciting.

Agreed, but we'll need a lot of luck injury-wise this season - namely our long term lads back earlier than expected and no new long-term problems.

He does seem to have the human touch and read an article about his time at City and this was what stood out apparently. People obviously respected him but he was able to delegate and listen and get people on board. Definitely a smart move to promote Derry as his Palace ears and eyes.

As you say it's a results business but this "feels" very different to FdB which is after all a really unhelpful precedent.

He spoke well at the presser today and answered questions with patience. He clearly understands that he's taken on a tough job, but seems to be relishing the challenge it presents him.

I have to say I'm more excited about the coming season than I have been for some years now.

There's a lot going on in our club in a very positive way. Should be fun. Can't wait.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.
